A bit about me I’m Lauren Lewis and I’m a fashion textile designer and co-founder of rust creative studio @ruststudio_. I live with my partner Adam, and our lovely cat called Penelope. Where I live My home is a four-bedroom 1940s terrace house in Lancing, West Sussex. I’ve lived here since 2016. What I wanted to change The house was in need of some TLC. You will need * Plain white cup * Small container * Ceramic paint * Paintbrush 1 First make sure your chosen cup is clean and dry. 2 Next, pop the cup into a small container (like a clean takeaway dish), and pour the ceramic paint around the sides of the cup. 3 Allow the paint to drip down the mug, and then use a paintbrush to fill in any gaps with the excess paint. 4 Remove the cup from the container and leave to dry for 24 hours. I moved here when I was only 22 and looking back it was a real wreck. An old lady had lived here for years in just two rooms, so there were hardly any working sockets and there were cracks in the walls. But the survey came back fine and I wasn’t daunted because I was young and romantic about having my first home. We gradually did it up and I continued to live here after my divorce. Recently I decided to extend the kitchen to create a bigger, more sociable space, which then turned into a complete renovation of the whole house. You will need * White card * Pencil * Ruler * Scissors * Copper spray paint 1 Download and print the star template at homestylemag.co.uk Place on a sheet of white card and draw around it. Cut out. 2 Next, take a pencil and ruler and draw the five lines from each tip of the star to the opposite sides, using the template as a guide. Score the lines with scissors, then fold each point of the star. 3 Spray the star with copper paint and leave to dry. Place on a mantel or secure with washi tape. l Pippa chose luxury vinyl tile flooring (LVT) for her reception rooms because it’s durable, easy to clean and warm underfoot. At around £20 per metre, it’s an affordable alternative to real wood or stone, and gives a realistic finish. l Click and lock laminate flooring, made from high density fibreboard with a photographic image, is one of the cheapest options at around £10 per square metre, and you can save money by laying it yourself. Mono magic We bought a detached bungalow a couple of years ago, which had an over-the-top coastal seaside theme with cornflower blue painted everywhere! I appreciate many interior styles but I always revert to neutral themes and I find this most calming for my home. I love the classic pairing of monochrome with lots of plants and natural elements for a laid-back feel. Add wooden open shelving. ‘I wasn’t keen on the idea of having cupboards on the walls and really liked the idea of having open shelves to display all my kitchen bits and bobs,’ says Sophia. ‘It does mean I have to keep things organised, but I love the fact we went for reclaimed timber shelves that really complement the navy units and wooden worktops.’ Opt for natural decoration. ‘I love plants and have a mix of real and faux ones around the whole house; I also like to introduce a bit of a rustic touch,’ says Sophia. ‘I’m a huge fan of the hanging baskets that are on the high street at the moment. Ask for plenty of recommendations. ‘Our biggest challenge was having the wall removed,’ says Laura. ‘We interviewed several builders and had varying quotes so it was hard to make a decision. You will need * Round mirror * Measuring tape * Pencil * Wide tassel fringing * Strong glue * Scissors 1 First, carefully place the mirror face down on your work surface. Measure and mark the middle point on the back of the mirror. 2 Next, draw a horizontal line across the middle of the back of the mirror with a pencil. 3 Now apply some strong glue along the line. Waffles with salted butterscotch sauce Prep and cook time 35 MINS Serves 4 Ingredients * 400g brown sugar * 1.2L single cream * 1 tsp salt * 1 vanilla bean * 450ml milk * 1 tbsp sugar * 200g butter, melted, plus extra for greasing * 8 eggs, separated * 250g plain flour * 1 pinch salt * Raspberries, for serving Method 1 For the butterscotch sauce, caramelise the brown sugar in a small saucepan over a medium heat, without stirring. My ideas were constantly evolving, even as the work was being done, but the builders always went with it because they could see what I was trying to achieve. l Go with your gut when deciding on your decoration. You will need * 15m of 6mm cotton rope * Sewing machine with zig zag stitch * White extra-strong thread * Ruler or tape measure * Sewing needle * Scissors 1 Set your sewing machine to zig zag stitch and untangle the rope.
