Forget the ‘rules’: this is a space where surprising colour pairings bring warmth, personality and a sense of ease to everyday living. The result is a welcoming backdrop that's as practical as it is playful. We've chosen the soft blush of Resene Soul Searcher as a base for the walls, paired with classic white-painted floorboards in Resene White Pointer. It's a pink interior, but not as you know it – disrupted (in the best possible way) by the chartreuse-y zing of Resene Tarzan on a feature headboard and grounded by the deep, calming green of Resene Forty Six on the bed base. A shoot at the Brown House by Studio LWA offered the perfect excuse for a road trip to Lake Ōhau, and a chance to see how the Lexus RX 450h+ Limited would perform beyond our usual Ōtautahi commute. Around town, we'd already noticed how far we could get on battery power alone, but on this journey the RX's hybrid system proved just as seamless over longer distances. I usually make these trips solo, but a drop in temperature and a 90 per cent chance of snow had me convincing my husband, Nick Burrowes, that the week could double as a midwinter escape. What's something you've had forever and still love? A piece I crafted with my uncle, Billy Apple, when I was eight, using Sharpies. I loved sharing that moment. Where's a place that inspires you? Kanazawa in Japan, with its vintage stores, contemporary art museum and furniture stores (a favourite being NOW). A go-to store in your neighbourhood? THE PROJECT Artist Janet Muir and her husband Richard Brown, a builder, worked with architect Lisa Webb of Studio LWA to rebuild the home they lost in the Lake Ōhau fires – a place where they can holiday with their sons, Harvey (18) and William (17). Olivia Williams grew up on a farm in Aotearoa, so was always outdoors and in nature. “That is still what inspires me most,” says the Los Angeles-based interior designer, who runs a small studio making a big impact on the world stage. Her carefree childhood fed into a love of design: “I was fortunate to be surrounded by creative people and had family in that world, which was eye opening and made me curious about furniture and textiles from an early age,” she says. Let it be. The Beatles might have sung it best, but architect Rebecca Walker incorporates this art of mindful acceptance into her daily life. Yes, her career is one that leans towards aesthetic perfectionism, but the Instagram image of domestic diligence (cue Meghan Markle collecting honey in a white blouson and arranging fruit into a rainbow arc for breakfast) against a hyper-curated backdrop seldom gels with reality.
