Okay, I have to confess, colour hasn't always been my thing. I mostly wear black, plenty of my household possessions are in relatively muted hues and anything with a raw finish will always have my heart — here's looking at you, bagged-brick cladding, unglazed ceramics and slubby linen weaves. Sitting in front of the fire outside their Wānaka home toasting marshmallows with their kids was not something Alisha and Ben Goodwin envisaged when they moved back to Aotearoa from London, despite the journey to building this new family abode beginning years before they settled down in the scenic town. The leafy outlook of this recently renovated home on the western bank of the Waikato River doesn't give away many hints that you're in central Kirikiriroa/Hamilton. Get the look - Send your R&R into the stratosphere with a sunken lounge you can turn into its own private universe. When contained to a distinct area, bold can absolutely be best, and we began our DIY process with a kinda cosmic patterned fabric. Your starting point could equally be an amazing artwork or rug. - The hues in our fabric then informed the Resene colours we chose for this space. Exploring a spectrum of inky hues that subtly shift from charcoal, to blue, to purple, we painted the walls with Resene Carpe Noctem, then made the colour scheme more multidimensional by painting the built-in ledge with Resene Indian Ink and the seat surround with Resene Black Doris. Design profile –— STYLE Step one on the road to running Emma Hayes Textiles saw its talented founder graduating from Unitec with a Bachelor of Design majoring in visual communications, before working in graphic design and advertising in Aotearoa and the UK. On returning home from overseas, she was given the chance to design fabric for fashion label Cybèle and later other brands, which spurred a love of seeing a design come to life on a tactile surface. NEW SHOWROOM ALERT Furniture, lighting and object designer Tim Webber has relocated to a new building he's zhuzhed up in what's become a bit of a design hub in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland's Grafton. Among the nuances of the past few years has come a deeper understanding of the comfort and joy our abodes can bring to our lives. We've recognised just how much good house-related choices have to offer. One creative who advocates for the power of colour in evoking a positive outlook is architect Aaron Paterson, director of Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland practice Pac Studio. Although he usually designs homes for other people, one of his recent projects was his own: the renovation of his family's 1910 transitional Mt Eden villa, which as well as the construction of an extension, saw virtually every surface updated with paint — 17 hues all up. For Toni and Dane Gale, a return to their home base of Te Matau-a-Māui/Hawke's Bay after more than a decade away was amply rewarded with the discovery of a perfectly placed pocket of paradise in a semi-rural, coastal suburb.
