THE PROJECT With Barry Condon of Condon Scott Architects, nurse Laura Christie and her builder husband Brad renovated this four-bedroom home in Wānaka's Minaret Ridge for themselves and their children Ted (4) and Charlie (2). Bookmark — STYLE The most compelling spaces, in my experience, are case studies in relationships. A great room not only foregrounds the unexpected connections that exist between objects, but also catalyses new ones between those objects and ourselves. A large part of my role as a stylist is forging those relationships, achieving clarity and meaning through the arrangement of pieces. No matter the context, I immediately take inventory of what's already around me, opening cabinets and identifying chances for subtlety and complexity, bringing forgotten keepsakes out while putting others away, varying their positions. THE PROJECT Rogan Nash Architects and builders Create & Construct renovated this five-bedroom home in Auckland's Glendowie for a couple and their three young children. An invisible thread runs through this home, just hidden from view. At first glance, you won't see it, yet the lifestyle-led ways in which it's woven in are a major reason why this renovation's been game-changing. On a sunny site in Tāmaki Makaurau/ Auckland's Glendowie, the house was built in the 1950s and updated in around the late ‘80s. For a while it worked just fine for its current owners, a family of five, but eventually its dark, damp, disjointed, low-ceilinged living spaces, random post in the middle of the kitchen and lack of connection to the garden had simply outstayed their welcome. DESIGN — One great thing In early 2020, a client of mine was looking to fit out a new café in the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre. Due to the Covid palaver, the budget was tight and materials were proving hard to come across, so we distilled the upgrade down to a new floor, new furniture and a little paint. The design became an abstract take on a pool, with the space and furniture all dipped in blue to give the immersive feeling of swimming, and tabletops in irregular, wiggly shapes to emulate ripples on the water's surface. In Copenhagen's historic Kuglegården building constructed in 1741 (fun fact: it was originally part of the Danish naval base and its courtyard was used to store cannonballs — hence its name, meaning ‘The Bullet Yard'), the swish makeover of Swedish furniture company Lammhults Design Group's showroom was revealed at recent Danish festival 3 Days of Design. The concept by Note Design Studio is intended to show how both creativity and productivity can thrive in a professional setting, but it works equally well at home. Inserting modern mirrored or steel surfaces and jolts of coloured furniture and art into a heritage or blank-canvas backdrop can make a space exceptional, or place your focus on juxtaposing heavy, natural construction materials with lighthearted, zippy paints. “Every picture tells a story” goes the saying, and every good piece of homeware tells one too. The behind-thescenes design thinking and technical details of this blanket add lovely layers to its already considerable appeal, wrapping you in care, creativity and cleverness. A beautiful blend of colour and texture conceived by Città's in-house textile designer Imogen Tunnicliffe, the Waffle Wool blanket is the New Zealand company's first foray into using this type of 3D weave for warmth.
