Kiwi architect and interior designer Annabel Smart and Netherlands-born interior architect Marijne Vogel are Studio 11:11, a design studio that explores the boundaries between interior architecture, objects and leathergoods. Having starting their business as a leathergoods label in Melbourne in 2014, they picked back up where their formal training left off, and today their work also encompasses architectural design, interior styling, and furniture and object design — plus they stock a collection of vintage designer lights they source from Europe. RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE TE ARAI BEACH HOUSE by Fearon Hay Architects With interiors designed in collaboration with Sonja Hawkins, this home in the upper reaches of the Tāmaki Makaurau/ Auckland region is sited amid Te Arai’s dunes and pine forests. It comprises a pair of gabled timber sheds referencing those found in rural Aoteroa, with an area for seating and an outdoor fire between them. To moderate the light, air, view and privacy, the house is layered with sliding timber shutters that, along with the roof and cladding, will develop a patina over time, further integrating the buildings with the landscape. The use of timber inside (oiled to provide warmth as a subtle counter to the exterior) brings the building together as a whole, and blurs indoors and out. A combination…

Multidisciplinary artist Cora-Allan Wickliffe is represented by galleries in both Tāmaki Makaurau/ Auckland (Masterworks) and Pōneke/Wellington (Bartley & Company Art), and has lived and practised her craft overseas. These days, however, she’s happily based in Waitākere/West Auckland, where she grew up. Everyone knows that renovating a character home — such as this one built in the ’30s — is like opening a box of chocolates. In Forrest Gump style, you never know what you’re gonna get. Forrest’s momma was wise in this respect: once the lid came off this Westmere property, there was a selection of surprises inside. Visually, there’s a lot going on at Volare, this new Italian restaurant/bar in Amsterdam, much of it more adventurous than you’d want at home — but overall, the fab fit-out by Studio Modijefsky contains relatable lessons. It shows how to avoid overt clichés by taking your interior to another time or place with subtle references only (here, the shades and stripes of the Amalfi Coast in the ’60s), use a bold hue in a doorway to transition from one space to the next (a bedroom to a walk-in wardrobe, say) and be decoratively daring in a dining room to create a mood and a talking point. Once you’ve spent a bit of time with Bailey Meredith, you realise it’s a no-brainer that she’d have created a chic dwelling for herself and her husband Ali Williams in West Auckland. With a background in fashion, and with the towel brand, Baina, she co-founded stocking the shelves at big-name international outlets Liberty, Nordstrom and Goop, there’s seemingly little she touches that doesn’t become beautiful. In the lush, bush-clad hills of Titirangi, Bailey and Ali’s two-bedroom, white-brick home is threaded with contemporary simplicity.
