‘This must be the place’, says the neon- sign writing on the wall at Kelly and Mark Pattie’s house. Two-and-a-half years, detail by detail in the making, their home is as close to the ultimate destination as they could have imagined, a place into which they’ve poured their heart and soul. Having renovated their two prior dwellings, they’d intended to do the same to the one that originally stood on this site in the seaside Auckland suburb of St Heliers. Stepping into the Christchurch office of Lume Design is like crossing the threshold of a serene warehouse apartment. Filtered light illuminates a room in which a statement pendant immediately catches the eye, a white sofa and marble coffee table convey a luxe elegance, and there’s a selection of sinuous objects that calmly tie in with the aesthetic. Husband and wife Jeff and Melissa Merrin merged their businesses in 2018 to create this chic one-stop shop. “Building a house is a big thing and clients are often nervous, so we wanted a space in which they’ll feel comfortable,” says Melissa. Following the sun and surf around Aotearoa, Abbie and Gus Herniman have lived in coastal towns for most of their life together, so when they decided to return to Christchurch, where Abbie grew up, the search began for a new seaside spot to call home. “We walked around our favourite suburb of Sumner and put flyers in the letterboxes of about 30 houses that looked like they were ripe for renovation,” says Abbie. “This was one of them.” In the valley behind the beach, the large section they scored has plenty of green space dotted with kauri, rimu and fruit trees. Sometimes in order to move forward, we must first go back. That’s certainly true of this home in Parnell, Auckland, which began life circa 1875 as five barracks used to house soldiers in nearby Albert Park. A decade or so later, the buildings were moved and arranged for one Captain Pirie and his family to form a large multi-gabled house, and that was just fine for a time — but now an artistic upgrade has seen it reconnected with its roots while facing an elegant new future. It shines a nationwide light on women and gender-diverse people working in the trades and gives people a choice when hiring tradies. So, Emma, what was the catalyst for this idea? When fashion designer Juliet Souter of womenswear label Marle and her husband Justin bought their first place together, they didn’t think they’d be able to make it their home. The great Kiwi beach holiday is a nostalgic memory embedded in our national psyche — the days gliding along carefree, revolving around swims, barbecues and yarns into the evening, preferably around a fire. For Sue and Paul Webber, many of the memories they’ve created with their family have centred on a single plot of land in Mt Maunganui.
