I have a love-hate relationship with the phrase “bringing the outdoors in”. It always feels a bit hackneyed, even if it is an accurate way of describing that blurring of where your house ends and your garden begins. So, this issue, we’ve flipped that notion on its head and instead were bringing the indoors out. In suburbia “This was an interesting project from the start,” says Lisa Lempsink, who devised this handsome front garden in Fife. “The house was designed by the architect Michael Laird and built in the early 1950s; it’s an unusual style of house and has a beautiful, tasteful interior.” The front garden, in contrast, was a complete blank canvas, with lots of open space and an oddly shaped lawn. Despite this, Lisa could see the potential for something special. “The clients wanted a low-maintenance garden with a relaxed feel and diffuse screening. Curves and fluid organic shapes were favoured. I did exactly that – something stylish and in keeping with the house, but wildlife-friendly.” She started by creating a perfect circle as the central feature, with the driveway curving around it.…

Don’t make a fuzz THERE’S NO TWO WAYS ABOUT IT: this thing is a monstrosity. But I must confess I would gladly welcome it into my home. Charlotte Kingsnorth has taken an ordinary plastic chair, one of those Robin Day classics you see in every high school in the country, and given it a big dose of much-needed fun. The artist has made a habit of adding personality to old chairs. This one was part of a commission for New York’s Objective Gallery, part of a series of ten ‘hi!breed’ chairs. For this upgrade, fittingly dubbed the Cookie Monster, the unforgiving polypropylene seat was padded then enveloped in blue faux fur. It looks incredibly comfortable, if not a little unsettling. The slightly odd mix of yellows, the space-age accessories, the retro-yet-modern cabinetry all somehow combine to make an indelible impression. In the spotlight MILAN DESIGN WEEK is the biggest furniture fair in the world, and sees some incredible products launched each year. At 2024’s event, taking place as this issue of Homes & Interiors Scotland goes to press, we have our eye on this floor lamp from Italian lighting specialist Servomuto. It’s the latest addition to Servomuto’s acclaimed Giardino collection and shows off an intriguing mixture of materials and inspiration.
