When I think how I started, I’d never have believed that I’d be able to make something like this,’ says Peter Berg of the terraced garden behind his home in the Rheinland-Pfalz region of Germany. Today, the seven levels encompass a vegetable garden, vine terrace, waterfall, meadow, orchard and two pavilions; however, in 2000, when he moved here, the plot was little more than scrubland. ‘Long ago it had been a vineyard,’ says Peter. ‘But over time it had become wild. There was no structure – no walls, no paths or steps, just a lot of overgrown plants and a height difference of around 40m, front to back.’
