How did you come to set up Midgley Green? We both studied fine art at Falmouth University, where we met some incredibly talented people working across disciplines such as product design, illustration and photography. After graduating we tried to keep our own practices alive, but gradually we became more interested in curating others’ work. At the time, young makers were setting up workshops in disused farm buildings. We felt inspired by their determination and wanted to work with them, so we created a space that showcases their crafts with care and attention. What can visitors expect to find in the shop? “You would never know that this house was originally part of a brewery. From the outside, it looks like a sweet, flat-fronted Georgian doll’s house,” says Jessie Sunderland of the home she shares with her husband, Allan, situated in one of the pretty streets surrounding Winchester Cathedral. The couple originally used the house as a pied-à-terre, but in 2015 they decided to sell their large home in the country and move here. This soon revealed the building’s shortcomings, so Jessie and Allan turned to interior designer Stephanie Dunning to transform it into something both practical and beautiful. Can you describe the project? This is the master bathroom in my late-Victorian semi-detatched home in Highgate, London. It was originally a bedroom, so we had to lay plumbing right through the house to access the soil pipe, which was definitely the biggest challenge we faced. I also removed an original fireplace, which is a little controversial, but I’m not very sentimental about antique fittings. What influenced your design? When creating the space I relished having no client restrictions. However, my husband, Johnny, uses the room, too, and had definite opinions on how it should look and feel. • The three areas where pattern and decoration work most effectively in a bedroom are the walls, the window treatments and the bed. Yet the simplest and least expensive are the headboard, scatter cushions and bed throw. These items are the most versatile, as they can easily be changed without having to commit to the redecoration of an entire room or the cost of new curtains. • I tend to prefer classic white or ivory bedlinen with a small detail on the corners, such as diamond stitch. Found items, pottery, childhood treasures and the natural world are each reflected in the wonderfully layered paintings of artist Debbie George. She graduated from Bretton Hall College in 1991 with a degree in Fine Art and her work quickly became characterised by its unstructured and wistful quality. I have been drawing and painting since I can remember, and my love of pottery and ceramics began at school. Initially, I wanted to be a potter and I studied at Bretton Hall, but after a few months I switched to Fine Art. I think my love of ceramics still comes through in my work. The immaculate interiors of this double-fronted, mid-19th-century London townhouse are a far cry from the tired family home that its owners, Laura and Robert Howard, bought five years ago. The transformation is now complete, but it required clear heads and brave hearts as everything but the four exterior walls had to be stripped away to reconfigure the internal space, and the new rooms painstakingly decorated. The journey began long before so much as a skip could be brought on site. Planning applications numbering well into double figures were submitted for the creation of an additional basement level, and the installation of a car-lift and skylights. When Emily and Gareth Hunt decided to trade their smart London postcode for the tranquil beauty of the South Downs, they envisaged an idyllic, carefree existence away from the hubbub of city life. However, the lure of an elegant Georgian coach house threw an unexpected curveball at the couple and their two young sons: the historic property had been split into two in the early 1970s, and a substantial, not to mention disruptive, renovation was needed in order to make it whole again. “You have to calculate the weight of everything when designing a roof garden to ensure it doesn’t exceed the load-bearing capacity.” What was the client’s brief for this roof garden? The large terrace spans the roof of an old town hall in south London, which has been converted into flats. My client owns the penthouse and wanted the roof transformed into a stylish outdoor apartment, where she can work, entertain and relax in the evenings. “I just love wood,” says Hugh Miller, radiating enthusiasm. Having trained first as an architect, this enterprising applied artist taught himself the art of fine furniture-making over eight painstaking years. Even the most hard-line contemporary design guru could not fail to have their pulse quickened by the romantic rose garden at the summer residence of Elena Piletra and her family. The villa is set among the olive groves, orchards and vineyards on the hills outside the walled Tuscan city of Lucca, famous for its medieval ramparts. IS BEDLINEN WITH A HIGH THREAD COUNT BETTER? I’m looking at a cotton bedlinen catalogue that shows thread counts from 200 up to 1,000. What are the implications in terms of appearance and wear? CY, Nottingham. I asked Sean Clayton of Peter Reed, 01282 616069, peterreed.com, manufacturers of cotton bedlinen, to help unravel this issue. The thread count is the number of horizontal and vertical threads across a square inch of cloth. Bedlinen with more than 180 intersections is known as percale, and more than 250, as super percale. Much higher thread counts relate to cloth woven from multi-ply yarns, which can be misleading as it doesn’t truly represent the number of intersections.
