Like most things in the antiques world, prices have fluctuated for French Lalique glassware made in the early 20th century, but demand for the rarest pieces remains strong and values have been solid in recent years. The market is international with a large pool of both private collectors and dealers in the UK and Europe. The general rule is that opalescent or coloured pieces are more highly prized than clear or frosted glass examples, and vases, mascots and scent bottles are most sought after. For Jennifer Bristow-Smith, an antique textiles dealer who originally studied sculpture and textiles, it is the history of printed wares that intrigues her the most. ‘I'm a huntergatherer, not a collector. I like finding things and then researching their story. Textiles offer a tangible link with past lives. Paisley pattern incorporates a motif that, once seen, is never forgotten. It is variously described as a teardrop, tadpole, pine cone, pear, mango and feather, or, with more cultural significance, as a combined cypress tree and flower spray symbolising life and fertility. The motif probably originated in Persia around 2,000 years ago and travelled through central Asia with the name boteh meaning ‘flower’. Reconfigured in innumerable ways ever since, whether simplified or elaborated, this distinctive shape is remembered and lives on. The pattern arrived on shawls among many imports East India Company ships brought to tempt populations in Europe in the years around 1775. LUKE HONEY'S September is upon us. It's ‘Back to School’: think stationery, calculators, pencil cases and classroom globes. Classrooms aside, I can't think of anything more appealing than a handsome antique or vintage globe. Pricewise, they suit all pockets. Although the finest, rarest examples – often of historical importance – can change hands for many thousands of pounds, 20th-century ‘Vintage’ globes are still incredibly affordable. Lacking that crucial rarity factor, perhaps, but still decorative objects in their own right. Globes come in two forms: terrestrial (covering the Earth) and celestial (representing the constellations of the night sky). The word ‘globe’ comes from the Latin globus, meaning ‘sphere’. No terrestrial globes appear to have survived from ancient times. It's thought that the oldest is the ‘Erdapfel’ (German for ‘Earth Apple’), made…

Léonie Seliger, director of stained glass conservation at The Cathedral Studios, explains how to care for stained glass windows With sensible maintenance, traditionally made stained glass can be extremely durable. But common problems can include structural failure due to insufficient support or, where stained glass is set into opening casements or doors, the repeated movement can, over time, loosen the lead network and cause breakages in the solder joints and the glass. Leaking windows may be treatable without taking them out of their setting, by re-grouting them with a glazing cement by a specialist glazier. Accidents are another major cause of damage, but if a piece of glass is broken it can often be repaired by edgebonding, thus retaining as much original material as possible. THE ANTIQUE Pot Pourri Jars Dried rose petals, lavender and rosemary sprigs, cinnamon sticks and cloves are the ingredients for a sweet-smelling pot pourri; a pure and natural way to scent your home. It was the ever-stylish French who invented specific containers to hold pot pourri in the 1700s. These lidded vessels were produced in porcelain, metal, lacquer and hardstones, and were pierced with small holes to allow the floral-herbal fragrance to waft out. The French fashion soon spread across Europe and by the 19th century pot pourri vases were part of the household inventory. Some came to the West from Japan and China, while many were made at the top British pottery factories, such as Wedgwood and Worcester, and the form stayed popular well into the 20th century. Now,…

What to Sell Now John Atkinson Grimshaw's innovative, sensitive portrayals of the atmosphere and ‘feeling’ of urban Victorian life led him to be considered one of the most accomplished British artists of the 19th century, the artistic equivalent of the great novelists Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell. Born in Leeds in 1836, by 1860 he had left his position as a Northern Railway clerk to become a full-time painter, producing landscapes and still lifes of fruits and flowers. His career breakthrough came in 1867 when a painting of Whitby harbour at night gained acclaim. The locales he painted most frequently were Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Whitby, Scarborough and London. Talking Shop I trained originally in sculpture and metalwork at Camberwell in London, then went on to work in interiors, jewellery and as a fashion buyer, as well as working in bridal. It's all quite visual, so vintage clothing is a natural extension of that and is sculptural in its own way. I opened my doors in 2007 in Brighton's North Laine. What inspires the displays in your home? I studied Fine Art and have worked as an artist/exhibition curator and interior designer for most of my life, so curating and displaying items is second nature to me. I always buy jewellery with the intention of wearing it; the fact that it has become a collection has been quite unintentional. Jewellery is something everyone has a connection to, no matter the style or price tag, and that's what I find the most interesting. I grew up with two grandmothers who loved jewellery and I'd ask them to repeat the stories behind their rings, brooches and necklaces. They both had a huge influence on my decision to pursue a career as a jewellery specialist, after a degree in Archaeology and Anthropology at university and now a Design History PhD.
