On 15th September 2018 the V&A museum in Dundee opened to the public. It was the first design museum in Scotland, and the first V&A site outside London. The man behind the icon, and the father of bentwood furniture as we know it, was born in Germany in 1796, the son of a tanner. By the time he was 23, he had opened a cabinetmaking business. In the 1830s he began experimenting with steam and glue, which would lead to his revolutionary method of bending wood to mass-produce durable and affordable furniture. Thonet took his creations to the Koblenz trade fair in 1841 and they caught the attention of Austrian Chancellor, Klemens von Metternich, which resulted in a commission to make furniture for the Palais Liechtenstein. A year later, the Austrian court granted Thonet the patent to bend wood using his new chemical and mechanical methods. He moved his business to Vienna and his five sons joined the…

To establish whether a piece is an original Thonet, start by looking for the company stamp, or paper label, on the underside of the frame. Don’t be disheartened if it’s missing, says Graham Smith of Graham Smith Antiques. ‘The labels tended to drop off, so if there isn’t one, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not a Thonet.’ The earliest examples of chair No.14 can be identified by their near-circular seat frame. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the trapezoid shape appeared. Screws are also a clue, says Graham: ‘These should be slotted.’ If you see a Phillips screw, it’s not antique. Nothing compares to the lustre of silver cutlery laid out on a dining table. Atmospheric pollutants such as sulphur, exposure to organic materials and acidic foods can all cause a chemical reaction that tarnishes the surface of silver. To avoid this, wash silver as soon as possible after use with a mild detergent, and then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. If you are not using cutlery for some time, store it in an air-tight container (a canteen is the traditional choice, but a plastic box is fine). Ideally, wrap it first in acid-free paper or place it in a sealed silver bag, which is impregnated with particles that prevent tarnish. Silver is a relatively soft metal and every time you clean it you will remove some of the surface.…

As with most collecting areas, maps and charts that are rare, high quality, and/or have interesting provenance appeal to connoisseur collectors and often sell for incredibly high prices. Whole atlases by Dutch cartographers and anything associated with Captain Cook, for example, are eye-wateringly expensive. However, there’s plenty to be had at a much more affordable level, in the hundreds and low thousands of pounds. ‘Compared to the rarities, the mid-to-low-level range of maps has fallen in value in the past two decades, so now’s a good time to start a collection,’ says Julian Wilson of Christie’s. From bathroom flooring and kitchen worktops, to lamp bases and desk accessories, composite material terrazzo has been everywhere this year. Surface and product designer Katie Gillies uses Jesmonite (a kind of acrylic and resin material) to cast and create an array of terrazzo homewares, and she shows others how to do the same in her workshops across the UK. Priced from £45 and located in trendy city spots, her classes give participants the opportunity to cast their own pair of terrazzo coasters using silicone moulds. Each coaster is unique to the maker, depending on the colour and quantity of the flecks used. We are moving too fast. We all want the quickest communication, the fastest internet and the most beautiful, design-led homes. But fashions come and go before we’ve had the chance to enjoy them. That’s why the Slow Movement – an ideology that’s about appreciating what’s right in front of you, in every moment – took my fancy when I heard of it. An allotment owner in Bristol introduced me to the idea. Which geographical areas does the term Asian antiques refer to? For furniture, it applies to pieces from India, Pakistan, China, Japan, Tibet, Indonesia and Korea. For statues and other decorative pieces, Asian antiques encompass all of those countries plus Thailand and Burma. When used in relation to carpets, the countries of origin are Afghanistan, China, India, Turkey and Iran. Is there a common thread to the antiques you import, collect and sell? ‘Herend porcelain services are modern classics, inspired by 18th-century Meissen porcelain. The factory still hand decorates its china, a practice that has mostly vanished in Britain and Europe where printing reigns supreme. Such is the quality of Herend that it’s prohibitively expensive, driving a lively second-hand market. The Period: 20th century The Source: Swedish textile artists The Appeal: Modernist designs with a cool, Scandi aesthetic Kilims or flatweave rugs typically originate from Iran (Persia) and Turkey, handwoven on looms using hardwearing woollen yarns. Unlike knotted woven rugs, they have no pile, which makes them lighter and less conspicuous when laid on a hard floor, such as wood or stone, yet are still decorative. In the early to mid-20th century, kilims became a Swedish speciality driven by the influential textile artist Märta Måås-Fjetterström. In 1919, Märta founded a textiles workshop in Båstad on the Swedish coast to preserve the dying art of handicrafts. Tea Total I’ve been collecting Meakin Celeste tea wares for the past seven years. I found some beautiful powder-blue fluted plates in a local charity shop and my mother found some matching bowls – we’ve been collecting together ever since. I’ve tried to date the set online, and I understand the plain pattern was introduced during wartime restrictions, so does that make it around 1940? There appear to be different stamps on the pieces. One says ‘Glamour – Celeste’ while another just says ‘Celeste’. I’m also confused about the ‘Sol’ pattern stamps that crop up during my searches. Other pieces seem to have no stamp at all but with ‘Meakin’ impressed in it. They all appear to have the same fluted pattern, but I wonder if they are from different…

We will no doubt continue to see incredible creations in glass, especially buildings. Frank Gehry has recently unveiled his designs for the Warner Bros offices in Los Angeles, which resemble giant icebergs in one long sculptural glass façade. In interiors, we will see some of the most exciting designs in lighting. Design brand Ochre, run by Joanna Bibby, Harriet Maxwell Macdonald and Solenne de la Fouchardière, unveiled Medusa Bloom at last year’s London Design Festival, one of many of their mesmerising lighting installations. I live on the seventh floor of an eight-storey apartment building in London. It borders Victoria, Belgravia and Pimlico – a busy corner behind Victoria Coach Station. It’s red-brick, late 19th-century I guess. I have lived here for 29 years so I suppose I must be happy here. My two daughters, aged 27 and 30, remember no other place to call home. I like the flat as a whole. I’ve never really thought about having a favourite room. I was always destined to be an illustrator, as my mother and grandmother were artists too. I trained in Newcastle, Florence and New York, but it wasn’t until 2012 that I realised my illustrations might work well on ceramics. Hallways are areas where you don’t spend much time, so be brave and use an exciting colour like Bancha [1], a rich, olive green. Dark hallways often make the adjoining rooms appear bigger and brighter. I run Home Barn with my sister-in-law, Sarah. We’re married to brothers and have known each other for over 20 years. Our love of vintage began when we were doing up houses and used to swap pictures of things we liked. In the early 2000s I was working in Ohio as a fashion designer. THE FIRST FLAT-PACK As its name suggests, chair No. 14 wasn’t Thonet’s only bentwood chair, or even its first; it is, however, the company’s best known. Created in 1859 for the Daum coffee house, a fashionable Viennese cafe, No. 14 has since become one of the most commercially successful chairs ever manufactured. Beyond its obvious aesthetic appeal, a large part of the chair’s success was due to a revolutionary production process that enabled workers to bend solid beech rods into elegant curves without splitting them. As it was made from just six mass-produced parts that screwed together, the chair could be transported easily and cheaply around the world: 36 chairs could be shipped in a single one-metre crate, making it one of the earliest examples of flat-pack furniture.
