I bought my first antique aged nine at a village fete. My grandfather had a house full of antiques, including 10 longcase clocks – midnight sounded like a full orchestra playing. After graduating with a degree in History of Art, I joined Sotheby’s at its Torquay salesroom in 1979, as a cataloguer in the Works of Art department. BETTER BY DESIGN What would become one of William Morris’s most famous designs, Strawberry Thief was first made as a furnishing fabric, the pattern based on the thrushes that stole strawberries in the kitchen garden of his countryside home, Kelmscott Manor, in Oxfordshire. Morris’s interiors company, Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co, was set up in 1861 to make handcrafted homewares, including wallpaper and fabric, using traditional craftsmanship. Morris block-printed his wallpaper and textile designs by hand and from the mid 1870s experimented with natural dyeing methods. In 1881, the company (now Morris & Co) moved to a printworks at Merton Abbey, London, when Morris cracked complex indigo discharge printing. Last November, fine art and antiques auctioneers Sworders sold a set of seven Regency dining chairs for £340. They were made from mahogany and boasted elegantly turned legs beneath their newly upholstered seats. Whoever bought them got a bargain. I fell in love with my home when I walked into the hallway just past the front door. I knew it had to be mine. It was more the atmosphere than anything else – I just had that feeling. The first piece of furniture I bought was a bed from Ikea for my first flat. It was wicker and actually quite cool. Where does your love of natural history specimens stem from? When I was about five or six, I used to go on long walks with my dad. I’d fill the basket on my tricycle with bird’s eggs and twigs – things for my mum to display on our ‘nature table’. I started decorating my home with natural history specimens about 10 years ago. The first item I bought was a pair of antlers on eBay. For me, using these items harks back to how I imagine someone living in Palaeolithic times – and how they’d have decorated their cave or hut. People think white is one colour, but it isn’t. There is a whole spectrum of whites. Think about what you want to use your room for and the kind of atmosphere you want to create. Brilliant white is clinical and cold so I would steer clear of it. Yellow-based whites have a sunnier feel. They have a glow, bringing a bit of sunlight into your room, but it depends on what you like. Some people prefer a more taupey white with a contemporary look. Those whites can create a gentle feel with undertones ranging from taupe to peach. The grey end of the spectrum is worth exploring, too. Artist, designer, craftsman, writer, socialist, William Morris was one of the major creative forces of Victorian Britain and the founder of the Arts and Crafts movement. He was born in Walthamstow to affluent parents and at 18 went to Oxford University, where he made a lifelong friendship with Pre-Raphaelite painter Edward Burne-Jones. He trained as an architect before finding his true vocation in art and design, and as a promoter of reform within that industry. He set up his interiors company with friends, including Burne-Jones as well as fellow Pre-Raphaelites Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown, who were also involved in the design of his home, Red House in Bexleyheath.…

Regardless of whether you keep cups on a shelf and rarely take them down, or use them on a regular basis, antique tea sets need to be looked after. Cups and teapots can become stained through use. Even tea sets used only infrequently may discolour from exposure to air pollution, dust and grease. Cleaning methods depend on the porosity of the ceramic body, the decoration and type of stain. On bone china sets, most surface stains that haven’t permeated the glaze will be easily removed with warm soapy water, although gilding should be treated with extreme caution. Old glazes and less robust bodies may become fractured by sudden temperature changes, causing breakage or cracking. When Marketing Manager Katie McCarthy moved into her two-bedroom Edwardian flat in 2016, she knew she wouldn’t have much money to spare for the interior decor. ‘It needed a lot of work so the budget had to be spent on the basics,’ she says. As Product Manager, I oversee each product’s life cycle, from concept stage through to the finished products and beyond. On a typical working day, I get in early to go through emails. I usually meet with my team to discuss new fabric suppliers and upcoming product launches, and will often visit our factory to keep an eye on new pieces that we’re developing. Porcelain factories in the UK started producing whimsical wares to mimic vegetables, such as artichokes, asparagus, cabbages and cauliflowers. Items included tureens and stands (ironically used to serve up desserts, rather than savoury things), dishes, plates, teapots and coffee pots. The English potteries of Chelsea, Longton Hall and Worcester were some of the earliest to produce porcelain vegetable wares from the 1750s and these are much sought after today.
