It’s with great pleasure, and still a small sense of disbelief, that I welcome you all to my first issue of Homes & Antiques as its editor. Although I have been on the team for some time, now that I’m at the helm, I find myself marvelling at how rich the magazine’s legacy is (2018 marks our 25th year – but more on that in a few months’ time). And so, it is fitting that this is an issue in which, as we look forward to the new trends for the New Year, we also consider the heritage and legacies that inform them. Regarded by most as an innovation of the 1970s, the Peacock chair actually owes its existence to the Spanish-American war of 1898. This short conflict ended with Spain ceding the Philippines to America in exchange for $20m. Trade links were swiftly established between the United States and the Philippines, and large consignments of rattan furniture, including Peacock chairs, began to arrive. Although there was nothing unusual about its construction (furniture woven from cane-like plants such as rattan, dates all the way back to ancient Egypt), its appearance was completely new: mostly woven on an hour-glass-shaped base, its seat and arms key into a high, flared, fan-like back. This flamboyant, tail-feather-like design, reminiscent of a peacock’s, gave the chair its name – other lesser-used tags include the ‘Manila’ and the ‘Philippine’.…

Surviving accounts suggest Robert Adam was an energetic, intelligent and charming companion whose vitality as a communicator of ideas is attested by his many persuasive and elegant letters. The 1760s became his brilliant decade: the era of his greatest and most extravagant projects, for which Adam is best known today. The houses of this decade still seem to define the very identity of the English country house of the later-18th century: in their ambition and classical reference, and in their elegance. During the 1760s Adam worked on Kedleston, Harewood and Osterley among numerous projects. None were new buildings to Adam’s design, but his role in each was extensive. A WORLD RECORD LOVE STORY Estimate $12m–$18m (£9m–£13.5m) Last autumn, the world gasped when Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi became the most expensive painting ever sold at auction, when it made $450m at Christie’s, New York. Though not in the same league, new heights were reached for the much-loved Russian artist Marc Chagall, with the sale of his romantic oil on canvas, Les Amoureux , at Sotheby’s to a private Russian collector for $28.45m. Like anything worthwhile in life, there’s no easy shortcut. Without much labelling, identification is usually a case of research and reading. As many designs were inspired by what was popular at the time, some examples can appear to be Murano or Scandinavian. However, these are not simple copies. Themes were taken and executed in a distinctly Czech manner. Emanuel Beránek’s late-1950s ‘Spear’ and ‘Bud’ vases (see page 113) echo Finnish designer Timo Sarpaneva’s classic ‘Orchid’ vase for Iittala of a few years before, but are very different in terms of form and the addition of colours. One could argue that there are three categories of Czech glass from this period. For me, mid-century modern Czech glass has it all – visual appeal, superlative quality, and superb stories laden with social, economic and political background. It attracts my eye, satisfies my hands, and feeds my mind. And, to top it all off, much of it is currently affordable, with most prices ranging from £20 to around £1,000, with the widest selection being priced from £80 to £500. When I first began buying Czech glass in the mid-2000s, I didn’t know that’s what it was. Most glass is unmarked and I couldn’t find many of these amazing designs in reference books. Nevertheless, I felt it was good stuff that must have a good story, and it turned out I wasn’t the only one. My friend, the collector Graham Cooley, had been hunting…

1 FRENCH FANCIES The first celebrity auction was that of the last mistress to Louis XV of France, Madame du Barry, whose jewels were sold by James Christie in February 1795 at his auction house in London. Christie had been selling works of art brought to London by émigrés fleeing the French Revolution from 1789 and, six years later, he auctioned the jewels of comtesse du Barry, who was beheaded in 1793 on suspicion of aiding those aristocrats. Rumours abound about how the jewels arrived in England, but one theory is that, shortly before meeting the guillotine, she smuggled them out of France on the pretence she was recovering stolen jewellery.
