Pea soup with chorizo Under R115 • Serves 4 Preparation: 40 minutes • Cooking time: 35 minutes • 250ml split peas, rinsed • 2 potatoes, peeled and cut into small blocks • 1L water • 15ml olive oil • 1 chorizo (200g), finely chopped • 2 leeks, chopped • 3 garlic cloves, chopped • 250ml frozen peas • 1 chicken stock cube 1 Boil the split peas and potatoes in unsalted water for 30 minutes or until tender. Skim any foam off the surface and discard it. 2 Heat the olive oil in a pan and fry the chorizo until crispy. Scoop out half and keep for garnishing. I was innocently browsing the internet the other day, in search of a new backpack for a hiking trip in the mountains, when a kink in the algorithm sent me down a rabbit hole where the ‘preppers’ of the World Wide Web hang out. And I got stuck, mesmerized. I had never even heard of preppers before. But there they were, whole colonies of busy bees, millions and millions of them, organised and focused and working.
