Blades of glory While designing the walkway leading from her parent’s contemporary home in Zwavelpoort, Pretoria to the cottage located on a lower level on the erf, architect Nadine Engelbrecht made the most of the slope of the yard to create these beautiful integrated grass steps. “The separate two-bedroom cottage, used for visiting family, is not internally connected to the main house. In this yard outside Darling, Wouter had to make a plan with the excess water that was accumulating on the lawn. The garden is on different levels, so he wanted to connect the pipe in the French drain to a hole already in the retaining wall on the lowest level – this is why this French drain is deeper than normal. 1 The trench was already dug to the desired depth and Wouter lined it with Bidim, a geotextile that prevents roots from growing through the gravel.
