When they asked me if I’d be the guest speaker at the Swartland branch’s meeting, I readily agreed but asked if I could bring a paint expert with me so that the attendees could do a small paint project, something they could take home with them. Karen Viljoen of Cape Town writes I pruned my hybrid tea ‘Ambassador’ in April because it didn’t look good due to a lack of rain, but it hasn’t revived and now looks even worse. What can I do? Ludwig replies Pruning too early and then not watering can cause the plants to die. Because of sparse rain, the plants would have become semi-dormant with leathery leaves to reduce water loss. Cutting them back removes the shade provided by the remaining leaves. It also signals the rose to sprout and with the water loss through open cuts and the lack of shade, the result is usually sunburn and stem canker. If your roses survive, do the lightest possible pruning in July; cut out old stems and weak twiggy growth, making sure…

For colour in spring and early summer, plant a bed of bearded irises (Iris cultivars). This perennial is available in many beautiful colours – shades of blue, orange, burgundy, mauve, yellow, bronze and white. Some are even bi-coloured. Bearded irises add impact to the garden in large groups of the same colour or planted along the edge of a pathway. In a mixed flowerbed they go well with plants such as delphiniums, foxgloves, hollyhocks and roses. Or plant alyssums and petunias in-between for summer colour, and pansies and fairy primulas for winter. Bearded irises bloom on stems carried above the foliage. Even when they are not in flower, the grey-green strappy leaves provide interest in the garden. These irises thrive in well-drained, compost-rich soil but are not particularly fussy about…

Summer rainfall Roses can be pruned from 20 July to the first week of August. In very cold areas, delay pruning until the middle or end of August. Plants that were infested with scale or mealy bug last summer can be sprayed with a concentrated dose of Ludwig’s Insect Spray (double the recommended amount); rub the scale off the stems before spraying. Aerate and enrich the soil around rose bushes because compact soil inhibits water absorption, weakening the rose and making it susceptible to scale. Fertilise with Vigorosa or Vigolonger. Transplant roses if necessary. Water once a week. Winter rainfall Stop watering roses that have not yet gone dormant and wait until they go into dormancy before pruning. Soil woes Baai Smit of Hartenbos writes We live at the coast and are struggling to get anything to grow in our sandy soil. Even the lawn is faring badly, even though we water regularly. We’re at our wits’ end! Any advice? JJ replies Too much sand is a problem, not only because it drains too quickly but also because it can compact.
