What you need • three pine crates• scaffolding plank• 12mm Supawood (cut to size to cover the bases of the three crates when they stand upright next to each other)• wood primer• white water-based paint• sponge roller• medium-sized paintbrush• panel pins• hammer• wood glue• clamps• wood screws• large metal castors What to do 1 Position the crates upright, side by side. Rose bed #1 A secret corner Lizette du Plessis, a rose enthusiast from Hennenman in the Free State and treasurer of the Federation of Rose Societies of South Africa (ROSA), recently created a secret rose nook in her garden. Q: My borehole water is slightly brak (salty); can I use it for my roses? A high content of sodium (Na) in the water and the soil is a real problem for most plants. I would advise watering once a week with municipal water and adding flowers of sulphur every three months. You can also add huge quantities of milled pine bark compost (a 45dm3 bag per plant) to help neutralise the salt. We think it may be from Germany? Anton Welz, director at Stephan Welz and Co, replies This is a Black Forest smoker’s table; the two compartments are for cigarettes and cigars. Although these items are known as Black Forest carvings, they don’t come from Germany but actually originate from Brienz in Switzerland. The musical box mechanism is not uncommon in furniture and I’ve seen them underneath the flaps of chairs as well. Purple wreath Purple wreath is covered in clusters of purple, star-like flowers in spring and early summer. It grows well in subtropical gardens and likes lots of sun. In warmer parts of the country it may even flower more than once a year. In colder regions, plant it against a wall or in a sheltered spot. Purple wreath likes well-drained, compost-rich soil. Keep the plant well-watered during dry spells and protect it from strong winds. This climber needs a sturdy trellis and will need to be trained up the support. Gardening tips for October • Weedbuster Week (2nd week in October) is a reminder to remove alien invader plants in your garden, including groundcovers such as Vinca minor and Vinca major (sterile cultivars and hybrids are not a problem), wild strawberry (Duchesnea indica) and green- and purple-leafed tradescantia. • Give newly planted trees and shrubs a thorough soaking once a week to encourage a good root system and new growth. The feeding roots of trees extend to the drip line of the branches, so make sure this area is well-watered and fertilised. • Fertilise established shrubs with a general fertiliser such as 2:3:2 and spread an 8cm layer of mulch to discourage weeds and retain moisture. Mango and white chocolate tart Makes 1 x 23cm tart • Preparation time: 25 minutes • Cooking time: 10 minutes • Oven temperature: 200°C • 1 packet (200g) ginger biscuits, finely crumbled • 100g (100ml) butter, melted FILLING • 200g white chocolate, chopped • 1 tub (250g) mascarpone cheese • 125ml double cream • 60ml castor sugar (or to taste) • 300g fresh mango slices, puréed • 5ml lemon zest 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C. It’s all very well for me, the self-declared Salad Queen, to be snooty about the green salad (notice the singular) of my youth. You know the one – the ubiquitous iceberg lettuce with cucumber and tomato and a little blanched onion (if you were lucky). Over time, the green salad has seen a number of upgrades: crumbly (crummy) feta, bits of fruit (pineapple, apple, orange), raw peppers and sprouts (not my favourite), croutons (phew!), olives and even red onion.
