During a makeover of their bathroom, Brad and Suzi van der Merwe of Cape Town decided to have the tiles painted. Unfortunately, the inside of the shower was also painted and although they tried to make the best of a bad situation, the paint soon started to peel. What should have been a fresh new look for the bathroom turned into an ugly mess. It would’ve been very labour intensive to remove the paint, so the couple decided to simply tile the shower instead. Suzi had her heart set on large tiles used in combination with mosaic tiles but she was concerned that tiles of this size couldn’t be used in such a small space. Previously, I used Scotchgard on my dining room chairs but it was ineffective as the fabric became stained. What do you suggest? They were known for their production of transfer-printed tableware such as plates, platters and teacups which depict quaint English country scenes. How to grow Plant in full sun, in well-drained, composted soil. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, needing deep watering only once a week. It takes well to being pruned to keep it compact and to create topiary shapes. The strong scent of the large mauve/blue flowers topped with short pale purple bracts attracts butterflies from a distance. The bushy plants (60–80cm high and wide) are excellent for flower borders and beds, as edgings, as container plants, in gravel gardens and in wildlife gardens. The long stems and large flowers are good for picking and last well in the vase. The flowers also dry well. Meaty quiche This delicious and decadent quiche will have them coming back for more – make it for a special occasion. Makes 1 (23 x 23cm) quiche • Preparation time: 20 minutes • Baking time: 40 minutes CRUST • 150g savoury biscuits such as Tuc, crumbled• 100g butter, melted FILLING • 200g streaky bacon, fried until crispy• 200g cheese grillers, cooked• 100g salami• 3 eggs• 250ml sour cream 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C. Mix the biscuit crumbs and butter together and press this evenly into a loose-base tart pan. Set aside. 2 Put the bacon, sausages and salami (chop if you want a more even distribution) in the prepared crust. Creamy mussels Try to keep the vegetables to a 7mm square dice when you finely chop them. Everyone rose garden loves but a fragrant plants wisteria such as sweet and orange peas, Chinese jasmine are also scented stalwarts. CLIMBER Chinese wisteria Chinese wisteria, a vigorous climber with clusters of fragrant flowers, is perfect for covering a pergola or a fence. Just make sure the structure is sturdy enough to support this robust climber. It is deciduous and bears its beautiful purple flowers on the bare branches in spring. Chinese wisteria does well in any type of soil as long as it has sufficient space to grow and spread. Keep it well-watered after you’ve planted it but once it is well-established, it needs less water. Q: When I pick my ‘Ingrid Bergman’ roses for the vase, should the cut always be at an angle and a specific distance from the eye? You can cut at an angle or straight. We prefer straight because there is less stem exposed to the elements. In other words, the wound is smaller. Cut fairly close above a leaf, but don’t worry too much about the distance. It’s more important that you don’t cut more than 50% of long-stemmed blooms off a bush because removing too many leaves puts the roots under stress. Marmalade • 12 oranges (fresh, not too ripe)• sugar• water 1 Wash the fruit and cut it into quarters (with the peel on). Remove the pips and place them in a tied-up muslin bag – this will be added to the pot when you cook the marmalade. Now slice the fruit into thin strips. Measure the sliced fruit: for every 250ml fruit, add 750ml water to a large bowl.
