Shiny side up Anina van Oudtshoorn of Standerton writes We recently lifted the wall-to-wall carpets in our house and discovered the most beautiful parquet flooring underneath. We had the floors professionally sanded but were loath to use varnish or anything similar, so we simply treated the wood – which was very dry – with pharmacist paraffin and then polished it with ordinary floor wax. The colour of the wood came through beautifully. How can we get the floors to shine like those in my grandma’s house? Lawn takeover! Peter van Dommelen of Vanderbijlpark writes This plant has overgrown my lawn during the past two years and even though I sprayed it with poison, it seems as if it’s thriving. Any advice? JJ replies This plant is called creeping sorrel and it’s extremely difficult to eradicate. Spray the entire lawn with Super Lawn Weeder or Versus early in the morning, and repeat after two weeks. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully. It seems as if there will be very little lawn left afterwards, so you will need to decide whether you’re going to sow lawn seed or replant sods. Whatever the case, first get rid of all the weeds. Chinese jasmine (Jasminum polyanthum) For sweet-smelling flowers, plant a Chinese jasmine. This climber is evergreen and will quickly cover an unsightly fence or scramble high up in a tree. In early spring it is covered with pink flowerbuds and star-shaped white flowers. Plant it near a bedroom window or next to your front door so its heady fragrance can waft into your home! Q: I received two ‘Oyster Pearl’ roses as a gift. One bush has two main stems, but offshoots have grown from the base. What should I do? This is exactly what happens with a newly planted rose – the two offshoots are precious basal stems! Don’t remove them; they will flower nicely in October and for the rest of the season. Q: My ‘Caribbean’ rose isn’t resprouting well after pruning, and with none of the reddish green stems which usually develop in September. What can I do? If the leaves of the newly sprouted shoots are green with very short internodes (the length between one leaf and the next) it means that the rose’s roots can’t absorb water. The word “pickle” usually describes coarsely chopped fruit or vegetables that have been preserved in vinegar or brine, with sugar and spices added for flavour. The advantage of making homemade pickles is that you can decide which flavours you’d like and what types of ingredients you’d prefer. Pickling is an age-old tradition that forms part of our South African heritage. You don’t need special equipment to make pickles, but because the contents are acidic, it’s advisable to rather use glass, enamel or plastic containers and preferably stainless steel pots. Curried chicken pie Under R100 • Makes 1 pie • Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 55 minutes • Oven temperature: 200°C •  15ml olive oil• 4 chicken breast fillets, chopped• 1 onion, chopped• 2 carrots, peeled and finely chopped• 2 stalks celery, finely chopped•  20ml curry powder• 5ml sugar• 15ml flour• 125ml milk, heated• 125ml chicken stock, heated• 400g puff pastry, defrosted• beaten egg 1 Heat the oil in a heavy-based pan and brown the chicken. Far and away Lindsay Salthouse of Johannesburg writes I inherited this cabinet; apparently, my great-grandmother brought it from India via England in the 1890s. Is it valuable? Anton Welz of Stephan Welz & Co replies This is a beautiful 19th century Anglo-Indian cabinet. It’s difficult to identify the wood; it could be rosewood or padouk as both are commonly used in furniture manufacture. Anglo-Indian furniture was made between 1858 and 1947 and drew influences from Indian-European design. This explains the floral motifs and lion feet on this piece. This type of cabinet was usually made for colonial administrators or aristocratic Indians.
