1 Pretty perennials
Perennials offer a glorious display of colour, form and texture as major players or fillers in mixed borders, in containers and alongside water features. The show begins in winter with cold-hardy hellebores, followed by primula, aquilegia, dianthus, Iris siberica, candytuft, bleeding heart (Dicentra) and clematis. Late spring into summer brings day lily, bearded iris, penstemon, Scabiosa and perennial salvias. Heucheras, with scalloped foliage in lime, plum, chocolate and apricot, grow well in light shade. Summer perennials include agapanthus, angelonia, aster, astilbe, balloon flower (Platycodon), gaura, liliums, salvia and Shasta daisy. Yarrow (Achillea) has clusters of flat flowers in white, pink, yellow, apricot and red and is pretty with catmint.
