Coming unstuck Laurika Kruger writes We recently bought a house with wooden floors, which the previous owners had covered with Novilon. We have now lifted the Novilon and need to remove the adhesive before we can sand and varnish the wood. Any tips on how to remove it? Frikkie Greeff, managing director of Woodoc, replies If the adhesive left on the wooden surface is black, it’s probably a tar or bitumen-type adhesive and can be removed with mineral turpentine and a sponge scourer. Chicken in milk It’s the simplicity of the recipe that makes this melt-in-the-mouth chicken so special. Serves 4–6 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour, 20 minutes Oven temperature: 160°C •  1 whole chicken• sea salt flakes• 1 lemon, quartered• 3 sprigs thyme• 30ml olive oil• 500ml milk• 4 bay leaves• 5ml whole peppercorns• 2 tins white beans, drained 1 Season the chicken generously with salt and place the lemon and thyme in the cavity. Fry the chicken gently in a little olive oil until brown all over and then place it, breast-side up, in a deep ovenproof dish with a lid. 1 SYRUPY BALSAMIC GLAZE SYRUPY BALSAMIC GLAZE Makes about 125ml • 250ml balsamic vinegar • 125ml Huletts Treacle Sugar • 10ml Huletts Molasses • 2 sprigs of thyme • generous pinch of sea salt flakes Mix all the glaze ingredients, except the salt, together in a small saucepan and stir over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil until the glaze has reduced and is syrupy and glossy. Keep a watchful eye on the glaze to ensure that it doesn’t boil over. Remove the glaze from the heat once reduced, season with salt and allow to cool. Toad lilies (Tricyrtis hirta and T. formosana) closely resemble orchids with their exquisite, exotic-looking flowers but don’t be fooled by their dainty appearance. They are hardy plants that occur naturally in Asia, including the woodlands of the Philippines, Japan and the Himalayas. Toad lilies bloom from late summer into autumn on thin stems carried above the foliage. Their white or off-white flowers are covered with hundreds of small dark purple or maroon speckles. These plants are not difficult to cultivate and although the stems grow quite tall, it’s not necessary to stake them. Toad lilies are perfect for damp, shady spots in compost-rich soil. In cooler regions, they can cope with morning sun. It’s important that the plant never dries out, but the soil also shouldn’t be soggy – make sure…

Cat’s claw creeper (Dolichandra unguiscati) is a highly invasive climber that attaches itself to a tree, shrub or fence and will then cover the host plant. If there is nothing in close proximity to climb, it will travel along the ground until it finds something. It is evergreen and has cat-like claws that attach themselves to almost any surface and are very difficult to dislodge. It bears yellow trumpet-shaped flowers from September to February. The fruit is a flat leathery capsule that splits open when ripe, releasing papery winged seeds that are carried off by the wind.
