1 Keep it colourful
In mild winter regions, you can still sow seed of alyssum, candytuft, linaria, California poppy, Gaillardia, Namaqualand daisy, snapdragon, sweet peas and Virginian stock. In cold regions, it would be better to purchase trays of seedlings.
Pastel colours suit small gardens; they create an illusion of more space and add greater depth to a shallow border.
Calendula, poppy and nemesia are warm and welcoming for an entrance and on the patio; ornamental kale in white, pink and purple makes a good subject for pots or mass plantings.
Fill rockery pockets with brightly-coloured gazania and arctotis, the glistening flowers of vygies, and indigenous bulbs of babiana, freesia, ixia, lachenalia, sparaxis and tritonia.
