It’s quite an experience visiting hydrangea expert Mary Spies on her farm Stormsvlei – she has over 3 000 of these plants! Mary has been cultivating hydrangeas since 1990. “After retiring as a hairdresser, my late husband, Willem, who was a farmer, saw the potential of the thriving hydrangeas in our garden, and suggested we expand them into a business. He then set about constructing a shade cloth system for the plants to grow under and I cultivated each and every cutting myself to make sure I got the varieties I wanted. A question I am often asked is ‘how often should I water my roses?’. This depends on the type of soil, the temperature and the amount of sun and shade the roses receive. This might sound complicated but it is really just common sense. Here are some general guidelines: Consider the weather. Water daily when day temperatures are above 35°C, every second day when temperatures are between 28°C and 35°C, twice weekly when temperatures are between 22°C and 27°C and weekly when lower temperatures prevail. Generally, 30 to 40 minutes of watering will allow enough water to reach the roots. For irrigation systems set to water daily, the duration should not be less than 15 minutes, otherwise the water will not penetrate below the surface. Remember that 15mm of rainfall…

Bohemian beauty Lesley Byrne of George writes My mother-in-law bought this unusual vase in a second-hand shop about 75 years ago. It says “Made in Czechoslovakia” on the bottom and it’s stamped “Amphora”. It’s still in perfect condition and I’d love to know its value, after all these years! Can you help? Decorate the patio with red mandevilla and pots of red patio roses, gerbera and anthuriums. Brighten surrounds of swimming pools, entertainment areas and patios with pots planted with a colourful mixture of flowering annuals (vinca, marigold, nicotiana, zinnia, verbena) and perennials (alstroemeria, agapanthus, pelargonium) available in garden centres now. Colour bags (plants in full bloom from the nursery) will instantly lift an established border. Q: How can I make sure that my roses will be in full bloom for Christmas? Your roses will have a second flush of blooms in early December – to delay the flowering of some of the buds, finger-prune or pinch off the new red shoots at the beginning of the month. Alternatively, identify new shoots sprouting further back on the stems which have three or four leaves and cut back to them. All the growing power of the rose goes into those shoots and you will have blooms by Christmas. Water regularly and deeply to encourage good growth and long stems.
