DESIGN Maurice & I This year's premiere, Maurice & I, is a New Zealand feature-length documentary celebrating the hugely influential architectural partnership of Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney, and their legacy that was all but lost in the devastating Christchurch earthquakes. The approach to design of the two architects, as well as their signature use of materials, transformed the face of Christchurch in the '60s and '70s and influenced their architectural peers throughout New Zealand. After a meticulous year-long renovation and restoration following flood damage, Cult's Parnell showroom has opened its doors, presenting a fresh New Zealand design destination. DESIGN “We weren't actually in the market for a new home when we spotted the ‘For sale’ sign while out walking one morning,” say the homeowners. “However, the minute we saw that view across the basin, taking in the Hundertwasser Art Centre, we were sold.” With the property secured and the existing leaky home removed, the next step was to create a family home on the 379-square-metre site. DESIGN Over a century later, one of those villas was purchased by another builder — as meticulous and skilled as its first owners. Ben Calvin and his wife, Lauren Keir, bought the house at auction about seven years ago in an ‘as is, where is’ condition following the earthquakes. Both were taken with its history and significance in the area, and Ben, in particular, had big dreams for its restoration and, ultimately, extension and renovation. “When we bought it, it was uninhabitable and the previous owners had begun the process of removing its heritage classification to demolish it. There aren't many double-skinned brick villas in residential Christchurch that have survived, or been restored, so it's quite an incredible building and a unique project and piece of history,” Ben tells us.…

HOME OF THE YEAR Conceived as a response to the wider natural environment, the home embraces it on many levels — some imperceptible and others grand. One of a handful of waterfront sections in a relatively new subdivision in Mangawhai, the site borders a public coastal walkway that winds along the edge of the estuary. There are no fences or visible boundaries between private and public land, so movement between the two is organic. Here, visitors and passers-by meander on the grass verging the estuary, sometimes seeking shade under the pōhutukawa that line its banks. Standing at the top of a marble quarry in Carrara, Italy 12 years ago, on his first stone-buying trip, CDK Stone managing director, Colin Durling, was awestruck. HOME OF THE YEAR As a traditional developer of build-to-sell multi-units, part of your role is to find efficiencies in repeatable forms. If you engage an architect to design one apartment typology and repeat it 50 times, your design fees are for one apartment, plus the formula to replicate it 49 times and stack them efficiently. Compliance costs are lower. Construction fees decrease. Materials can be manufactured or prepared en masse. In the best of cases, the savings found through that formula trickle down to buyers. In the worst cases, you get dwellings with serious compromises in quality, craftsmanship, longevity, and well-being. HOME OF THE YEAR Over a decade ago, Christchurch-born, Australian architect Nic Owen and his wife Josephine Backhouse stumbled upon a little Japanese teahouse on stilts that had been plonked onto one of the courtyards at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. This diminutive structure — set among the washedout red of the brick Renaissance architecture of the V&A — was the Beetle's House, a temporary installation by Japanese historian turned architect Terunobu Fujimori. “It had this amazing material,” says Owen enthusiastically. “We had to research what it was, and we had to use that!”. Here, the landscape is in constant flux. It was the ebb and flow of the tides and the pattern of the water's movement that began the conceptual journey for the design of this house, the 2024 Rural Home of the Year. Incorporating the sweeping, interlaced patterns of the estuarine environment, it is one of flowing curves juxtaposed with elements of solidity. Using a combination of sandy-toned brick and vertical timber, Belinda George Architects devised an exterior material palette that would subtly reflect the environment — the brick meeting the hues of the sandbanks, and the timber, finished with Dryden WoodOil in Black-X, a deep, warm brown, echoing the boughs of the pohutukawa that line the banks of the estuary.
