Hong Kong-born designer, architect and artist Chi Wing Lo is a luminary in the world of furniture. Serving as the artistic director of Giorgetti for over two decades, he released his own collection in 2014, Dimensione Chi Wing Lo, in collaboration with Italian artisan workshop Maroni. Though he’s spent more than 30 years abroad in the US and Europe, and now resides in Greece, many still associate the designer with his roots. Not all craft is lost – at least not in the eyes of Brooklyn-based designer Stephen Burks of Man Made, whose body of work attempts to bridge the gap between artisanal traditions and industrial manufacturing. He’s worked with a wide spectrum of international brands including B&B Italia, Parachilna, Missoni and, most recently, with Dedon for its Ahnda collection. How much does one’s surroundings dictate one’s style? We pondered to what extent Hong Kong – or broader Chinese culture – influences people’s interiors and how they express it given their own inclinations.
