Laura Poilly did not begin her working life as an interior designer. She worked in the soft furnishings industry in Mauritius for quite some time, eventually moving back to Australia after completing an advanced diploma in interior design. OPEN UP Creating an outdoor entertaining space in a small courtyard can be challenging, however this inner-city terrace proves that not only is it possible, the result can be amazing. When considering the entertaining area, the team at The Greenwall Company needed to minimise any disconnected space throughout the living and courtyard sections. “A house should look like it’s been planted in the garden,” says Janine Mendel, landscape designer and owner of CultivArt Landscape Design. “Create a great structure but don’t forget about the plants because without them it’s just an artificial space. In a semi-industrial area of Richmond, Victoria, Angie Florence of Space for Life was handed the original plans for four new townhouses. A developer had purchased the plots and had visions to turn the side-by-side sites into four luxurious three-bedroom, three-bathroom properties that would eventually sell for at least $1.6 million. Original plans had been drawn up already, but they were verging on unusable. “I had to laugh when I was handed the original plans and I actually saw a toilet positioned inside the kitchen pantry,” muses Angie, who was brought in to work her magic on the redesign. With gnarled branches growing through cracked windows and walls crumbling in decay, it was almost as if mother nature was staking her claim on the old Vicarage. But fate intervened and the once proud old building has been transformed into a luxurious modern home. At the beginning of the project, the Vicarage was completely gutted, leaving only the bare facade.
