1 Sony's in a romantic mood… A third-generation version of Sony's 'wireless glass speaker' is arriving at retailers this August. The Bluetooth-based LSPX-S3 is priced around £350 and features a glass enclosure that doubles as a tweeter thanks to three discreet actuators. These combine with a 46mm mid-range unit and base-mounted passive radiator to provide full-range audio with 360-degree dispersion (two models can also be paired in stereo mode). Sat within the glass is an LED light that can be set to either mimic candlelight or pulse in time with your music. 2 Speed up! There are various flavours of high dynamic range including HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. And then there's Hybrid Log-Gamma (or HLG to its mates). HLG was jointly developed by the BBC and NHK of Japan, with the objective of creating a backwardscompatible 4K HDR broadcast standard, eliminating the need for separate SDR and HDR UHD broadcasts. The idea was to produce a single 4K broadcast that had all the benefits of HDR, but didn’t banjax the picture for those watching on SDR 4K sets. HLG achieves backwards compatibility by blending two different curves to create a third. It's a hybrid (hence the clunky moniker) composed of a traditional gamma curve, which has been used for decades to encode the darker parts of a TV signal, and an exponential logarithmic curve…

THE SOUNDBAR MARKET is saturated, but amongst the myriad models it's possible to see trends, as brands coalesce around specific price points and feature sets. A disadvantage for Denon's Home Sound Bar 550 (beyond the somewhat clumsy name) is that its basic specification – a compact 'bar with no subwoofer, Atmos/DTS:X decoding with no upfirers – is mirrored by models around the £300 price point. And it sells for £550. Box-tickers may therefore not give it a second glance, choosing instead to eye soundbars from the likes of JBL and Yamaha. But I think they'd be missing out. GOT A DISH? Get Freesat and save cash! In my head that plays like an infomercial. Very shouty, but quite compelling. It’s true too. For those that have churned away from subscription Sky, the Freesat platform is a great contract-free alternative. However, when it comes to recording boxes, your choice is limited. Perhaps that's why Freesat itself has joined the fray, linking with manufacturer Arris (now owner of PVR stalwart Pace) to produce this 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos-enabled timeshifter. Small and neat, the Freesat UHD-4X features dual F-connectors on the rear, a single HDMI, a digital optical audio output and Ethernet to support Wi-Fi. APART FROM BEING blockbuster films, what do Spectre, Deadpool, Logan, Red Sparrow and Joker have in common? As anybody who feverishly awaits the publication of the British Board of Film Classification's 'Annual Report and Accounts' will know, they're the films that received the most complaints from the public about their age ratings between 2015 and 2019. Traditionally, these complaints concern levels of violence, sexuality or language that people consider too strong for the certificate the BBFC has handed out. However, last year saw things move in a different direction. According to the BBFC's annual breakdown, the rating decision that drew the most ire concerned a film originally released back in 1980. Reading about the acquisition of MGM by Amazon seems like another nail in the coffin of a once-great industry! TV is also affected by this – we have lost Fox to Disney, and all the shows I watch have disappeared from Sky. The 100, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and now War of the Worlds are on Disney+. So, instead of hardened villains soiling themselves at the very mention of his name, everyone underestimates this unknown geezer as he slaughters his way through a gallery of dodgy Russian gangsters. The similarities are hardly surprising given the film was written by John Wick scribe Derek Kolstad, and uses the same stunt team as the Keanu Reeves franchise. However, while Wick wants to escape his old life, Hutch Mansell (played by Better Caul Saul star Bob Odenkirk) desperately wants back in. Mario Golf: Super Rush Nintendo → Nintendo Switch → £45 Mario may be a plumber, but we’ve not seen him near a stopcock in years. Instead, he spends most of his time either jumping on the heads of creatures simply going about their business, or skiving on a golf or tennis court. Maybe he is a plumber after all. Mario Golf: Super Rush is the latest off-shoot sports game featuring the rotund water technician and the first in the golfing series to make it on to the Switch console. LG has confirmed its UK mini LED TV range, dubbed QNED, will feature both 4K and 8K options, the latter including an 86in set that just happens to be one inch bigger than rival Samsung's top-flight mini LED model. Described by Park Hyoung-sei, president of LG's Home Entertainment Company, as an 'evolutionary leap forward', the brand's QNED models combine a locally dimmed mini LED backlight with a Quantum Dot NanoCell panel. The increasing popularity of streaming music and video services like Spotify and Netflix is behind Sainsbury's plan to phase out sales of CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays, according to the supermarket giant. The retailer said the decision, announced in July, was made earlier this year. Space saved on racking silver discs will be used for food, clothing and homeware goods. Rival supermarket chains ASDA, Tesco and Morrisons haven't yet followed suit. Some Sainsbury's stores will continue to sell vinyl records – an area of the home entertainment market that has grown despite consumers shifting away from physical products elsewhere. In 2020, vinyl sales in the UK exceeded 4.5m units, the highest in over 25 years. And in the US, retail figures showed LPs contributed more to music industry coffers than CDs.…

Samsung continues to make our own largescreen TVs look very small indeed with its Micro LED 'The Wall' range, as the brand has followed up previous 146in and 292in iterations with a commercial property-focused model exceeding 1000in. A modular display technology utilising Micro LED panels, the new Wall, says Samsung, 'can be installed in a variety of positions, including concave, convex, ceiling, hanging, inclined and L-type.' THIS BASEMENT HOME cinema project was somewhat unusual for UK installer Cyberhomes, as it was asked to come to the rescue when the original integrator ceased trading. Thankfully, it discovered the hardware that had already been supplied was more than up to scratch – Datasat amplification and processing for a Dolby Atmos system using Procella speakers and subs, plus a 173in Stewart projector screen. Yet there was still work to be done, including room treatments and smart lighting, source and projector specification, rack-building and calibration. To ensure the room itself could handle the potency of the audio system, a braced timber structure was introduced on top of the metal framing that was already in place. Thanks mainly to the 4K HDR experiences unlocked by its new X1 for Projector processing silicon, Sony has already wowed us with two of its current home cinema beamers, the mid-range VPL-VW590ES (see HCC #318) and step-up VPL-VW790ES (HCC #316). Can it complete the hat-trick with the high-end VPL-VW890ES? Or, put another way, is this £25,000 laserpowered behemoth really £12,000 'better' than the VW790ES? JBL has been building sound systems for commercial theatres, screening rooms and mastering suites since the advent of the ‘talkies’, so it’s fair to say the company knows a thing or two about delivering barnstorming cinema sonics. However, its premium Synthesis strand has always been focused on the high-end custom install scene. Until now. The SDR-35, its first AV receiver model, represents JBL Synthesis spreading its wings and targeting more 'affordable' audio products. To mark 30 years in the vinyl-spinning business, Austrian hi-fimarque Pro-Ject has unveiled the Debut Pro. Priced £700, this is the latest addition to a turntable range that was first introduced in 1998, and will slot in above the Debut Carbon Evo model, which launched last year. Due to hit retailers in September, the Debut Pro claims a number of new refinements, including a 'class-leading' one-piece carbonaluminium 8.6in tonearm with customisable vertical tracking angle and azimuth. This is joined by a new moving magnet cartridge, the Pick-It PRO, that's been designed in conjunction with specialist Ortofon. The deck's damped aluminium platter is also new. As with other Debut models, the belt drive Pro supports 33/45rpm speed switching via its on-body toggle. It will also ship with a 78rpm round belt.…

Paramount has announced a UHD Blu-ray boxset for the first four movies in the Star Trek franchise. Beaming down September 7 in the US (there's no news yet on a UK release), the set will feature remastered Dolby Vision presentations (but not Dolby Atmos audio), plus both the theatrical and director's cuts of Wrath of Khan. Just to frustrate Trekkies, Paramount has also announced that a new 4K HDR restoration of the director's cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture – with Dolby Atmos – is being lined up for the Paramount+ VOD platform.…

'A WOLF IN sheep's clothing.' That's how installer Imagine This describes this snug media room, where the owner can choose between an immersive Atmos sound system and audiophile hi-fisetup while enjoying a living room aesthetic. The brief demanded a space that didn't look like a traditional home cinema, but Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio where on the wishlist, plus next-gen console gaming. Vinyl playback also needed to be integrated. The room features five flatbed speakers, four height speakers and a trio of subs (one at the rear, two at the front). TO DESCRIBE THE SP11RA as a mere soundbar does it a disservice. This ambitious 7.1.4 system is more a fully-fledged cinema solution, one that adds standalone rear speakers to the subwoofer and front soundstage. IN SPACES WHERE a multichannel setup might be seen to be overkill, all-in-one style systems to which you add a pair of speakers can make a lot of sense. Typically, they offer the ability to handle an audio signal from a TV or set-top box, along with excellent music performance. On the face of it, the £1,750 RS201E from HiFiRose looks like more of the same. But there are some unusual differences here compared to the competition, not least the ability to provide content for your TV as well as decode it. I've just bought an LG OLED65CX which is arriving tomorrow.
