Saudi Arabia Goes on Beheading Spree Even as the Islamic State (a.k.a. ISIS) sparked global outrage by beheading several journalists and aid workers, Saudi Arabia—a key US ally in the region—has been on a beheading spree of its own, executing people at the rate of more than one per day in the first three weeks of August. When researcher Mourad Gabriel conducted a study of West Coast fishers found dead in the woods, he discovered rat poison in 85 percent of the corpses and concluded that the small, furry, forest-dwelling mammals must have been foraging for food when they came across an unregulated marijuana grow laden with rodenticide. For his trouble, Gabriel received death threats and his dog was fatally poisoned, according to Mother Jones. Now, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed changing the status of the fisher to “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act, which would impose severe penalties for harming or killing them. Washington State University researchers are developing a marijuana breathalyzer to help cops detect stoned drivers. Currently, blood tests are the only way to determine the level of THC in a driver’s system. However, this new device would detect THC on a person’s breath. Stoned driving continues to be a hot-button issue in states that have legalized recreational or medical marijuana use. Because THC can stay in one’s system for weeks or even months after smoking, it is very difficult to determine a driver’s level of impairment. Smoking pot the previous day can result in a positive blood test given Washington’s legal limit of five nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood. Since the pot breathalyzer cannot distinguish when THC was consumed, it could easily lead to positive tests for completely…

A 36-year-old medical pot patient from San Francisco has been found guilty of felony possession and transportation of marijuana after attempting to fly with three and a half pounds of cannabis last year. Authorities discovered the stash in Enrico Dasig Esguerra’s possession when he arrived at San Francisco International Airport for a flight to Dallas–Fort Worth. Esguerra showed his medical card to police and explained that his insatiable appetite for pot necessitated the rather large quantity for personal consumption. The first great contribution that marijuana has made to medical science is that it helped us discover and understand the endocannabinoid system. The discovery of this system will likely lead to an entirely new branch of medicine, with doctors who specialize in using our body’s own endocannabinoids to treat pain and diseases. Marijuana’s next great contribution to science could be a better understanding of aromas—in the form of terpenes—as medicine. Cannabis concentrates are shedding light on how aromatherapy can be a very powerful therapeutic tool.
