Several Oklahoma Republicans came to the defense of marijuana—albeit inadvertently—after their state joined Nebraska in a lawsuit asking the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the recreational pot law in Colorado. American teens have really cleaned up their act, according to an annual study of nationwide teen drug use. The latest “Monitoring the Future” survey found that today’s high-schoolers are just not that into booze, cigarettes or prescription drugs. Kids are even smoking less pot despite an increase in states that allow recreational and medical use. According to the survey, just 6.5 percent of eighth graders, 16.6 percent of 10th graders and 21.2 percent of 12th graders reported using marijuana in the previous month, down from 7, 18 and 22.7 percent, respectively, in 2013. Roughly one in every 17 high-school seniors—6 percent—used cannabis daily or near daily, although 81 percent of 12th graders reported that it was easy to obtain pot. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon declined to pardon high-profile pot prisoner Jeff Mizanskey, even as he freed nine other nonviolent offenders. Mizanskey, 61, is currently serving life without parole, victimized by an unfair “three strikes” law that has since been repealed. Mizanskey, who has been in prison for more than two decades, was arrested in 1993 for possessing five pounds of marijuana. That non-violent pot offense landed him a life sentence under Missouri’s “prior and persistent drug offender” law: Mizanskey had already been arrested in 1984 for selling an ounce of pot, and he got busted again in 1991 for possession of over 35 grams. Given the opportunity to right this blatant wrong, Governor Nixon inexplicably failed to pardon Mizanskey. The snub drew public outrage, particularly since Nixon’s own son was…

The unlikely duo of Nancy Grace and 2 Chainz took the Internet by storm after the rapper appeared on the HLN host’s eponymous talk show to debate marijuana legalization. And while Grace approached the discussion with her patented blend of bullying and histrionics, 2 Chainz more than held his own. Grace kicked things off by offering some cherry-picked incidents involving pot and children as evidence that marijuana should remain criminalized. The Nation, the progressive political magazine, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year—and there’s a lot to celebrate. The oldest continuously published weekly in the United States, The Nation was founded on July 6, 1865—meaning that it predates light bulbs, cars and motion pictures. Colombian Guerrillas Deny Drug Trafficking During recent peace talks in Havana, Colombia’s FARC guerrillas issued an angry Dec. 14 communiqué insisting: “We are a rebel group, not narcotraffickers.” This came in response to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos’s suggestion that FARC drug-trafficking could be considered a “political crime,” potentially sparing guerrilla leaders from prosecution. The FARC statement accused the government of trying to “confuse the minds of Colombians” and decried the existence of a “capitalist narcotrafficking business.” Five days later, authorities in Panama announced the arrest of 59 people in a trafficking ring that allegedly involved the FARC and Mexico’s leading drug cartel. The 18-month investigation led to the seizure of three tons of cocaine, as well as cars, speedboats, cash and several bank accounts. Most of those arrested were…

Cancer Breakthroughs Last November, a study conducted at the University of London (published in Molecular Cancer Therapeutics) found that the cannabis compounds THC and CBD successfully shrink brain tumors. Researchers noted that the cannabinoids work in tandem against cancer cells due to the different “pathways” taken by THC and CBD in the body. They also render tumors more susceptible to cell-killing radiation in lower, safer doses. Organ Donation For years, pot patients were denied donor organs for transplants—but now hope is on the horizon. In early December, the California Medical Association unanimously approved a resolution that opposes state transplant clinics rejecting organ recipients due to medical pot use or failed THC tests. Brazil has legalized the cannabis compound cannabidiol for therapeutic use, in the first major pro–medical marijuana step for the South American country. The National Health Surveillance Agency officially removed CBD from Brazil’s list of banned substances, which means the marijuana molecule can now be prescribed by physicians to treat seizures, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia and other illnesses. The health agency officially acknowledged that CBD doesn’t cause intoxication or result in psychological dependence. And while Brazil won’t produce the CBD itself, lawmakers are drafting legislation that will allow it to be imported. While the new law represents a significant advance, studies indicate that CBD often works more effectively in conjunction with other cannabinoids—including THC—that would only be allowed under a broader medical pot policy.…

The UK-based GW Pharmaceuticals acknowledged that Sativex, its cannabis-derived oral spray, has failed a late-stage clinical trial to determine whether it can be used to relieve pain in cancer patients. Participants in the initial Phase 3 trial were given Sativex, which is sprayed in the mouth, or a placebo three to 10 times a day for five weeks. The test subjects receiving Sativex reported a statistically insignificant difference in pain relief from those receiving the placebo. The disappointing results initially caused a plunge in GW stock, which had its first poor showing since the company was listed on NASDAQ in 2013. But thanks to an encouraging—and well-timed—update on Epidiolex, GW’s cannabis-based childhood-epilepsy drug, the company’s stock recovered quickly and was actually up 2 percent by the end of the day.…

Music Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 and 35” has often been cited as a possible source of 420 (multiply the numbers and you get 420). Then there’s Crosby, Stills & Nash’s “4 + 20,” but the opening line—“Four and 20 years ago”—actually refers to the birth of the song’s subject. Although the nursery rhyme “Sing a Song of Sixpence” mentions “four and 20 blackbirds baked in a pie,” we doubt a ditty penned in the 18th century was the source of 420. The origin of 420 is common stoner knowledge by now. A group of young potheads starts meeting after school at 4:20 to get stoned. Thanks to the Grateful Dead and the apparent desire of young tokers to have some structure built into their drug consumption, the 420 legend grows into the world’s first stoner holiday. As for the origin of the world’s second stoner holiday, 710, a lot less is known.
