A new study featured in the medical journal JAMA Psychiatry on Dec. 6, 2023 showed evidence that in early trials, psilocybin can help treat depressive episodes in bipolar II disorder (BDII), which is described as a “lesser” mental illness compared to bipolar I disorder. The study was limited to only 15 participants (six male and nine female) diagnosed with bipolar II disorder, who were given 25 mg doses of psilocybin. They met with therapists numerous times during pre-treatment sessions, during the days they received a dose, and were given post treatment sessions. All participants had lower scores on the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating scale after the third week, and by the end, 12 patients met the criteria for remission and saw “no increase in mania/hypomania symptoms or suicidality.” According to the…

Per the Dutch Opium Act, personal possession of small amounts of cannabis and other soft drugs, up to 5 grams, remains a punishable offense in the Netherlands, though this law is hardly ever enforced. The state’s motto has been “Hope” for more than 120 years, and on the anniversary, current Gov. A survey recently published in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research recently found that 12% of adults between the ages of 50-80 (a combination of individuals categorized as Boomers and Gen X’ers) have used THC-based cannabis products within the past year. The survey was conducted by the team behind the University of Michigan’s Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, and led by the college’s addiction scientist, Anne Fernandez, Ph.D. “As the stress of the pandemic and the increased legalization of cannabis by states converged, our findings suggest cannabis use increased among older adults nationally,” Fernandez said. “Older adults represent a vulnerable age group for cannabis use due to interactions with medications, risky driving, cannabis-related mental health impacts and increased possibility of falls and memory issues.” The survey also found that…

Hemp Cannabinoids Could Become Pesticides According to researchers at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, hemp-derived cannabinoids could eventually become the source of new natural pesticides. A study conducted by scientists at the School of Integrative Plant Science at Cornell AgriTech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) found that hemp leaves with a higher concentration of cannabinoids showed less damage from chewing insects than leaves with fewer traces of cannabinoids. The new potential pesticides probably won’t end up on food crops, however, because of the psychoactive nature of cannabinoids including CBDA, THCA, and CBGA, which can be converted to CBD, THC, and CBG, respectively, via a process called decarboxylation.
