A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine on March 12 found that the number of medical cannabis consumers in America has doubled between 2013-2020. The study was conducted by researchers at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, who reviewed data between September to November 2022. Researchers found that in reviewing data from the 2013-2020 Nation Survey on Drug Use and Health, “The prevalence of U.S. residents using cannabis for medical purposes increased significantly from 1.2% in 2013-2014 to 2.5% in 2019-2020…” and that many “socio-demographic and clinical subgroups showed similar significant increase” in medical cannabis use. The researchers also added that people living in a state with legal medical cannabis were “significantly associated” with medical cannabis use.…

Another possible benefit of CBD is good news for smokers who want to quit, but are looking for extra help. A study conducted by researchers at Washington State University and published in the journal Chemical Research in Toxicology examined how CBD could potentially help people quit cigarette smoking. The study, called “Inhibition of Nicotine Metabolism by Cannabidiol (CBD) and 7-Hydroxycannabidiol (7-OH-CBD),” examined human liver tissue and cell samples, and found that CBD inhibited a key enzyme that’s needed for nicotine metabolism. Slowing metabolism of nicotine’s key enzyme, researchers believe, could help smokers wait longer before they need to inhale more tobacco. A study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Review on March 18 compiled data on the growth of Canada’s adult-use cannabis industry since legalization began. Covering the first four years of legalization, the research stated that more than 3,305 cannabis dispensaries have opened (described as approximately 10.6 stores for every 100,000 residents). An average of $11.85 CAD (or approximately $8.64 USD) was spent on cannabis per person, per month, and 59% of neighborhoods were within a five-minute drive of a cannabis dispensary. “Over four years, per capita stores and per capita sales increased each year by an average of 122.3% and 91.7%, respectively, with larger increases in private versus public systems (4.01 times greater for per capita stores and 2.46 times greater for per capita sales),” study authors wrote.…
