Los Angeles voters overwhelmingly approved Measure M earlier this year with 80 percent of the vote. The City Council–sponsored ballot initiative seeks to bring regulatory harmony to the LA cannabis industry. Measure M repeals Proposition D, the odious 2013 initiative that set a limit of 135 medical marijuana dispensaries in the sprawling metropolis and banned new businesses from opening. The new measure will allow the city to license and regulate dispensaries and help the transition to recreational cannabis sales coming up next year. Under Measure M, the City Council will determine the number of pot shops allowed to operate in Los Angeles. Chocolate-Dipped Cannabis Cookie-Dough Pretzel Bites FORTHE EGGsLESS COOKIEDOUGH: ¾ cup softened cannabutter 1 cup brown sugar ½ cup white sugar 2 tbsp. vanilla extract 2 cups flour 2 tbsp. water 1½ cups chocolate chips FOR THE SANDWICHES: 2 bags square pretzels ½ cup chocolate chips (for dipping) 1 tsp. coconut oil Using an electric mixer, whip the cannabutter and sugars together, then add vanilla extract and combine well. In March, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission issued the state’s first-ever recall of recreational cannabis due to the excessive pesticide levels detected in retail flowers sold at the Buds 4 U pot shop in Mapleton. The Liquor Control Commission, which oversees Oregon’s recreational pot sales, confirmed that tested samples of the strain Blue Magoo, a clone-only, indica-dominant hybrid of DJ Short Blueberry and Major League Bud, failed the threshold for pyrethin levels. Pyrethins are synthetic chemical compounds used to kill insects that harm plants. Emerald Wave Estate in Creswell, Oregon, cultivated the recalled weed. Farmers in the coastal city of Taranto in Southern Italy are currently cultivating hemp to decontaminate the farmland soil ruined for raising livestock by toxins like the chemical dioxin, which have been discharged by a local steel plant. The cannabis that these farmers are growing contains very little THC and has the ability to leach the soil naturally through a process known as phytoremediation, in which the rapidly growing roots of pot plants bioaccumulate, degrade or otherwise render harmless toxic heavy metals. Students for Sensible Drug Policy, with the help of its campus chapters, collects information on the drug policies of hundreds of colleges and universities across the country. The organization has completed a full 2017 survey ranking several hundred of the country’s educational institutions in terms of their drug policies. The list includes such categories as whether drug violations are automatically referred to law enforcement; whether resident advisers in the dormitories have discretion in deciding to report drug violations by students to police or to school administrators; and whether students can be evicted from dorm rooms for drug violations. According to new data, the number of Canadian pot patients has quadrupled in just over a year. The month prior to Trudeau’s election in October 2015, Canada boasted 30,357 registered medical cannabis users. By December 2016, that number had soared to 129,876. This spring, Donald Trump announced the formation of a White House commission to combat opioid and heroin addiction, to be headed by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Cops across California are livid over proposed legislation that would prohibit them from cooperating with investigations or raids by the federal government against legal cannabis businesses. Assembly Bill 1578 prohibits state and local police from using their funds, facilities or personnel to help a federal agency “investigate, detain, report or arrest” anyone acting in accordance with California’s marijuana laws, unless there’s a court order.
