Back in January, while our troubled world was looking the other way, Spotify finally secured a patent it had been after for a couple of years called: “Identification of taste attributes from an audio signal,” which would allow it to monitor our behaviour and collect data to enhance the way it customises its music recommendations.
Spotify explained that the technology would work by retrieving audio, including our voice signals and background noise from where we are at any given time, to understand “content metadata” about users, such as our emotional state, gender, age and accents, and would rely on information such as: “intonation, stress, rhythm and the likes of units of speech,” to determine if we are feeling: “happy, angry, sad or neutral”.
