EXPLORE
A Unesco World Heritage site and the location for many of the awe-inspiring scenes in the new Murder on the Orient Express film, Valletta has no shortage of relics to marvel at, from fortresses to megalithic monuments. The baroque St John’s Co-Cathedral (above), with its carved vaults and gilded ceilings, is a must-see, but if you want to relax, you’re just a short drive from wild, beautiful Fomm ir-Rih Bay.
TASTE
At lunchtime, meander away from Valletta’s beating cultural heart to Nenu, a temple to traditional Maltese baking, for coffee and Ta’ Karmnu l-Bidija (flatbread topped with tomato, onion, marrow, green pepper, aubergine and marjoram). The Harbour Club (above) serves excellent beef tartare; and for just-caught seafood overlooking the water, book a table at Scoglitti.
