Houses, office blocks and roads in Houston are submerged in water (right) after Hurricane Harvey hits the US state of Texas, dropping a year’s worth of rain in a few days. The tropical storm destroyed as many as 48,000 homes, with 32,000 people housed in emergency shelters and more than 40 dead in the state – a toll rising each day as more damage was uncovered as the waters began to recede.
