Prince Philip will attend the Captain General’s Parade on the Buckingham Palace forecourt on Wednesday. It marks the finale of the Royal Marines 1664 Global Challenge, held in aid of The Royal Marines Charity. The Duke, who celebrated his 96th birthday in June, became Captain General of the Royal Marines in 1953 at the age of 32, after the death of the previous office holder, George VI. Since then I have become fascinated by this woman, who was adored by so many people around the world, and I sat enthralled last week watching the ITV documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. It made me laugh and fight back tears in equal measure as the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry reflected honestly and warmly on their memories of their beloved mother. It was a fantastic programme and a real coup for ITV to have gained such unprecedented access to the Princes, who came across as dignified and warm. MOTHER NATURE’S BLUSH As temperatures rise and water evaporates, one section of a salt lake known as China’s Dead Sea turns a wonderful rose hue (above and left). Said to be 500 million years old, the lake in the northern city of Yuncheng is some 46sq miles in size. The blush colour is caused by an increase in salinity, which stimulates production of the red pigment beta-carotene in salt-loving algae.
