I’m writing this in June, which is Pride Month. Over the weekend, my son and I took a walk through our neighborhood, which happens to be the epicenter of Brooklyn Pride, the borough’s boisterous, family-friendly celebration of LGBTQ+ culture. It felt joyous and safe and made me proud to be a part of a community where people show up for one another.
This is not the case everywhere. Over the past couple of years, drag has become the focus of a widespread campaign of ultra-conservative fearmongering, with anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and bills to ban it introduced in states throughout the country. Back in March, when the Daniels—Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan—accepted their Oscars for Best Director for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Scheinert addressed the audience: “We want to dedicate this…
