The Museo dell’Occhiale in Cadore in Veneto, Italy, might have an unassuming façade, but this minimalist exterior is diametrically different from what it houses. This, the Museum of Eyewear, is sort of a cabinet of curiosities, displaying paintings, sculptures, and early designs that chronicle the birth of spectacles—there are bejewelled Victorian monocles, original instruments used to create glasses, and even modern sunnies that reference pop culture. In all, there are close to 4,000 pieces that give visitors an insight into the evolution of eyewear in the world. What does it mean to remake a film that may well have not existed? That’s the premise of director Ashim Ahluwalia’s Events In A Cloud Chamber, which premieres at the Venice Film Festival this month. He interprets an experimental short of the same name, filmed in 1969 by Akbar Padamsee, but here’s the problem: No copies of the print exist. That’s also why he wanted to recreate it—“a radical, unique film was at the risk of being forgotten, and I didn’t want that.” The only record Ahluwalia had was an invitation card from a 1974 screening—no photographs, no sound tape.
