LOVELY LILY WINNER of this month’s best-letter prize, a Najo necklace valued at more than $690. I love Lily Collins [“The Life of Lily”, BAZAAR March]. She is so elegant and a true individual. Yes, she’s beautiful and can boast having a pop-star dad in Phil Collins, but she also seems refreshingly down to earth. It’s always great when someone who has star appeal doesn’t have an ego-obsessed outlook on life. Collins is no bimbo, either. You’ve had such a long career. How has the industry changed? I’ve always been a little on my own island, you know. I wasn’t doing what others were doing. I started in the ’70s and ’80s, and the ’80s had lots of makeup — big lips, big eyes — so that’s where I stemmed from. Who influenced you then? I loved Guy Bourdin and Serge Lutens. I was only 17 when I left London for New York and moved into Christy’s [Turlington Burns] beautiful SoHo apartment on Centre Street. Katie Ford and her husband,André Balazs, were the landlords.
