HELLO! There is an incredible richness to the Australian architecture and design industry that I think the rest of the world is really starting to tap into. Each year in Milan or at Maison&Objet in Paris, I am seeing more and more Australian and Asian Pacific designers, artists and makers sitting alongside their counterparts from everywhere in the world. One of my favourite artists is Indivi Sutton, so naturally I had to grab one of her pieces for New York House (p. 136). Our architects and interior designers are likewise in a belle epoque of incredible work, with SJB’s The EVE Hotel the hottest ticket in Sydney for glamorous accommodation (p. 146). The bathtub, in its many incarnations, embodies an intersection of form, materiality and spatial experience, where architects use them to define th atmosphere of a space as much as for function. For centuries, the bathtub has been more than just a functional fixture – it is a symbol of relaxation, ritual and design evolution. From the grand bathhouses of ancient Rome to the sculptural freestanding tubs of modern living, the simple act of bathing continues to be an integral part of our homes. The earliest known bathtub dates back to 1700 BCE, which was linked to the discovery of a built-in “Queen’s bath” in the Palace of Knossos, Crete. Those Architects is one of those practices that just get it right for relaxed beach-side living, where barefoot luxury, expansive spaces and tactile colours come together. For Brandon, the tones are cream and pink, with pink grout further defining the check of tiles. Simple and defined, the shower recess is a great curve of tiles extending to the round skylight above. Conversely, the bath is squared, but again completely tiled. The glass bricks add another layer of nuance with a slight circular motif. Lovely. Fostering a sense of togetherness, the home embraces the principles of Wabisabi – a Japanese philosophy centred around the beauty and humility of natural patina – and manifests as a sophisticated, liveable home. The in-betweenness of her work is one of its great strengths. In the first iteration, it was classic and touched on Hollywood Regency. The new client loved it, but how you live in a house is personal. She wanted it to be about curves and minimalism, so we got together and rethought it around what would suit her. She had also fallen in love with some really incredible marble that she had bought and shipped to Australia for the project (Avant Stone). I enjoy working in stone and I use it in a lot of my projects, so I was comfortable with her decisions, and they were good choices for hero pieces and detailing. The colours were great. Designed to complement the adventurous nature of its owners, an Egyptian-Australian and a Danish minimalist, the home is a match made in hygge (cosy) heaven, albeit with exotic beats. Building a rear extension to house a primary suite and facilitate an open living style, the design creates a sense of abundant space while emotively aligning old and new in this classic Victorian-era weatherboard home. Accommodating a newly built laundry, powder room and generous main bathroom to either side (plus cupboard storage along its axis), a deep peach-toned corridor laid with terracotta-hued tiles matches the original hallway’s width. A new build tailored for brief stays, the Hotel House dissects the components of a boutique hospitality experience – encompassing glamour, convenience, cultural immersion and meticulous attention to detail. Architecturally, the home is expressed as two intertwined but contrasting volumes. On the upper level, the aesthetic is smooth and light, while the base is highly textured with an abundance of dark and moody finishes. Conceptually, the spaces are arranged around the expectations of a hotel experience. A curved tunnel-like corridor leads from entry, past a bag drop into the drinks lounge, beneath a dramatic void and an abundance of light. Designed for ease and sophisticated entertaining, the chef’s kitchen and bar is highly functional but refined in detail, open and subtly glamourous. Designing, as he so often does for an existing client, the brief for the four-storey, four-bedroom townhouse was relatively open, with an entirely free hand for the ground floor art gallery/art school and a combination of pink and green for the remainder. The clients, who Natale has designed for in Brisbane, also own a home in Forte dei Marmi (Fort of the marbles) outside Florence and their proximity to the great Carrara marble quarry prompted a desire for a variety of marble to be used extensively. Compounding this was a recent trip to France, and as Natale states, “They loved, loved, loved, all the maximalist restaurants and the design language of Paris.”. Granted, it started during Covid when a string of projects had been put on hold, but imagine how happy the client would have been to secure such a formidable design force for a bit of a shop! The client was new to Studio Doherty, but had come to them for new furniture for an Art Deco-era home overlooking the Yarra River. Having previously owned a Victorian terrace in Albert Park (lovely but smaller), the new house required much larger furniture than the terrace-suited-pieces they currently owned. Tadao Ando once spoke of the delineation between inspiration and imitation, of the quiet necessity of bringing individuality to your work. The exact words escape me, but perhaps that is fitting — for the sentiment calls to mind the impulse to design from the heart rather than create a pastiche. The trite echoes of over-emulation have grown monotonous and there is a common proclivity to claim that a residence truly belongs to its surroundings, rather than simply residing within them. Arent&Pyke present a layered approach, modelling how salient design embraces divergence — both the transient and the terrain. While the colour palette and orientation of Wharf House may strongly pertain to nature, its nonconformity is staunch.
