In a world enamoured with speed and growth, stepping out of the humdrum of everyday life to create moments of celebration is even more vital. Reaching 20 years in business has been a milestone for Australian furniture brand Great Dane. And one which provided the opportunity to honour the journey so far. Arriving at the site with Andrew, Nick Carr, director of Intermode, felt the full weight of both privilege and responsibility for the project: “As we approached, Andrew’s car paused and I suddenly understood the emotional enormity of such devastation; we were really entering a disaster zone,” says Carr. Andrew’s home and garden had been utterly ravaged by the fires, but rather than up and move, he decided to rebuild. This was certainly the case at Heliotropian House where Eva-Marie Prineas of Studio Prineas has reconfigured a 1980s terrace house in Sydney’s north with adept precision. The home balances planning constraints and build time alongside the client’s functional requirements, all while capitalising on the breathtaking views – no easy feat when dealing with a tight building shell. “Due to the limitations of the original layout, from the outset we wanted to create a home for the family that embraced all the site had to offer,” says Prineas. For the Forsyth siblings – Abigail, Jamie and Stuart – entrepreneurship was “bred in the bone”, having grown up around a father, and extended family that all ran businesses. So with this early inclination, coupled with sharp intuition, the Forsyth’s have built three successful business ventures – KeepCup, Returnr and Minor Figures. Before founding one of the first, and easily most iconic, reusable cup brands, KeepCup, Abigail and Jamie had built up BlueBag, a chain of sandwich and coffee shops. Design for Álvaro Catalán de Ocón, is an opportunity for protest, and his products are an expression of this manifesto. While Ocón’s calm demeanour and benevolent vision are at odds with the more aggressive connotations usually associated with the notion of ‘protest’, there is no doubting his passion. The house Linghao Architects christened ‘Every Window a Garden’, is a thesis on time – on a past, present and future way of living, and on time’s affects on the material and metaphysical, light and shadow. It is also about the in-between, of thresholds of both space and time – waiting, pausing and observing. University professor Kenneth Paul Tan and musician Clara Lim-Tan had lived in this semi-detached house with Kenneth’s father, now retired, for two decades. In common fashion, the interior was compartmentalised, with too many rooms for the family’s usage. Corridors were dark and the environment warm and stuffy. For Morgan Jenkins, Nielsen Jenkins’ principal, the joy of architecture lies in working through the site’s natural position and situation, which is then overlaid with the needs and requirements of the client. It was crafted for a young family looking for a quality home where they could make the quotidian special. The ground-floor entrance and courtyard are less about offering an arrival statement than they are about creating a reassuring sense of ‘coming home’. “Graphic design is about finding a narrative and the experiences that go along with it … the outcome is a broader overview of design.” Undoubtedly drawn to the beauty of form and objects, Melbourne-based graphic designer Zoran Konjarski thinks about things differently. “I’m a very visual person, and more of a problem solver,” he shares, “I’m not the biggest reader, but I like books … it makes sense, but also doesn’t.” Despite the obvious correlation, the road to graphic design came as a matter of deduction. “The fire has certainly made me even more connected to this place.” Architect and urban designer Nick Turner, principal of Sydney-based practice Turner, has the exact time of day in his mind when the ferocious fires came through his property, Palmyra: 7.48pm on 4 January 2020. His property on the western edge of Kangaroo Valley, a two-hour drive from Sydney and encompassing a contemporary home on 40 hectares, was facing impending destruction. Turner was anticipating a major fire given the extreme drought of the previous years.
