A SOFT RIFLE CASE is a simple tool that often goes underappreciated. However, shooters should know that they are not equal. Silicone-treated knit socks that cover a long gun will meet the minimal legal requirements for transporting long-guns to and from a range in many states. “Gun socks” can be purchased in most retail chains or online retailers such as Brownells and Midway USA for $10. The most basic shotgun and scoped canvas rifle cases with zippers start at less than $15. Perhaps you have no issue toting your long gun in an inexpensive case; if it works, it works! SIERRA BULLETS acquired Barnes Bullets in 2020. They’re good brands with great reputations and loyal followings and, until now, significantly different products — sort of. Most of us think of Barnes as the innovator in copper-alloy expanding hunting bullets, and of Sierra as a multi-generational leader in accurate lead-core bullets for both targets and hunting. Neither assessment is inaccurate, though neither is complete. They also parallel. Fred Barnes established Barnes Bullets in 1932. The original Barnes was a cup-and-core bullet, i.e., lead core with copper jacket. Expansion was controlled by the thickness of the jacket and the amount of lead exposed at the nose. ONCE THERE WERE TWO Germanies. West Germany, the democratic one, had a problem. Its various police organizations were armed with a list of .32- and .380-caliber pocket pistols. In the 1970s, they were faced with terrorists armed with much heavier weapons, and sending out officers with a pocket .32 was not appropriate in the eyes of the German police. They requested a standard 9mm replacement, which was downselected to three candidates. In an un-German fashion, they adopted all three. SARSILMAZ — pronounced as it’s spelled — is not a name that rolls smoothly off the tongue for a native English speaker. For that reason, when the 145-year-old Turkish arms manufacturer tried to make a splash in the U.S. market about 10 years ago, it created SAR USA, based in Miami, Florida. SAR USA is the exclusive U.S. importer, distributor and partner for Sarsilmaz and it makes great guns.
