MICROS & SUBS
I appreciated the article about pistol-size categories by James Tarr (November 2024). I have thought about this, too, and I agree that the term “micro” has been overused. A North American Arms (NAA) mini-revolver and Baby Browning are micros. I came up with a scale based on barrel length only, which allows for a quick, reasonable characterization. I realize that it will not create universal agreement, but here it goes.
Hunting/Target: Greater than 5.25 in.
Ex.: Browning Buckmark, Taurus Raging Hunter
Full Size: 4.25 in. to 5.25 in.
Ex.: Model 1911, Hi Power, SIG Sauer P320, Beretta 92
Compact: 3.5 in. to 4.25 in.
Ex.: Smith & Wesson Model 59, Glock 19, HK USPc
Sub-Compact: 3 in. to 3.5 in.
