XS SIGHTS announced the second generation of its R3D day/night sights (R3D 2.0) in July 2023, which got me thinking about iron sights on a pistol. I believe day/night sights are the best choice for handguns intended for defens ive use, and the earliest ones I can think of also came from XS Sights circa 1996, the famed Big Dot and V-shaped rear blade. I think a clarification is in order. As I’m using the term “day/night sights” for handguns, know that these can be used in any gradient light, day or night. WATCHING PRODUCTS BEING BUILT, visiting factories, and being able to sit and talk with engineers and product managers about what I just saw are some of my favorite aspects of this job. Early in my career, I realized that attending these events is the best way to gain a technical education, which I ardently desired to properly write this column. THE DOE WASN’T HUGE, but we were getting down to the end of the season and I was a bit light on my self-imposed rule: “Take at least one doe for every buck.” The shot was quartering slightly to, 80 yards, so I held on the point of the shoulder. MYSTERY MAGAZINE Q: My friend gave me some old gun parts knowing I like to tinker, and the box magazine included the enclosed pictured magazine, which I was not able to identify. I recently saw an article based on a photo, and it looks like the magazine could be for a M1918 Chauchat. Do you agree? It needs to be cleaned and lubricated as the follower is very sticky, but it looks like it could be made serviceable with some work. I have no use for it and I was thinking that perhaps some collector might have a need for one, but I would not want to try to sell it without properly identifying the magazine. EVERYDAY CARRY HOLSTERS should have certain features in common. Pick up any C&G holster and you’ll find them: Precision-fit manufacturing, durability, and configurability. I would argue that they should also be made in the U.S.A. Why? Because more Americans carry a handgun for personal protection than any mass of citizens in the world. Several other features rise to importance. Most holsters should be red-dot ready, for example. ELMER KEITH’S #5 REVOLVER This Colt SAA was extensively customized by R.F. Sedgley, Harold Croft and Neal Houchins around 1928. Keith wrote about this sixgun in .44 Special extensively. A photo of the #5 appeared in the December 1967 issue of Guns & Ammo. It sold in 2021 through Rock Island Auction for $253,000. Ernest Hemingway’s Westley Richards Double Rifle in .577 Nitro Papa’s single-trigger Westley Richards was built in 1913. Hemingway took it to Africa on a four-month safari, alongside his wife Mary, in 1953. That trip inspired the novel “True At First Light.” Any Westley double is a treasure, but this one takes that definition to the next level. This great rifle is in the collection of Bill Jones.
