WORLD WAR I STOCKED LUGER Q: Here are several pictures I took of a World War I German Luger with a holster, wooden stock attachment and field cleaning kit. CUSTOM QUANDARY When modifying firearms, there is always the question, “Was it worth it?” One of my first attempts to improve a firearm involved a Ruger American Predator rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor (ruger.com). Those guns have always offered excellent performance for the price. At the time of my purchase, it was a sub-$500 rifle, and it seemed obvious to me that most of the savings came from using an eyesore of a polymer stock. Effective? Yes. Elegant? Not even close. G&A’s staff evaluated the merits of every new product during the course of multiple firearm industry events and field activities. Nominations were made at the conclusion of the annual Outdoor Sportsman Group (OSG) Roundtable in Grand Junction, Colorado. FINDING FIREARM-RELATED posts on social media is more difficult than it was even 5 years ago. New content guidelines and algorithms have hidden, buried, or deleted gun-related content. Platforms including Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly known as “Twitter”) and others have made it more difficult for users to find this content, even if they follow or are subscribed to the gun-centric accounts. Thanks to new “borderline content” policies enacted by tech giants such as Google and Meta, any videos or posts flagged as “related to the sale or promotion of firearms” can be blocked, even for subscribers of the account that posted it. WHEN I ANNOUNCED ON SOCIAL MEDIA that I was appointed the “Handgun Editor” for Guns & Ammo, more than a few people asked, “When can we expect your inaugural ‘9mm versus .45’ article?” Honestly, that was hilarious. RIFLE STOCKS in various forms have been around for centuries. The chassis concept has really only been available for a couple of decades. A stock or a chassis is essential to shoot a rifle, but they have such different characteristics that it pays to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each. Chassis don’t compete against the low-cost, injection-molded polymer stocks that come with many b olt-action rifles. For shooting a rifle out to a couple hundr ed yards, low-cost options are the most prevalent and do everything required to make shots on predators or b ig game at those distances. IN 2021, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down what should have been a landmark ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen. The case challenged New York State’s restrictive handgun carry law, and the high court ruled that the right to carry a handgun in public was a Constitutional right preserved under the Second Amendment. The decision effectively made “May-Issue” carry permit statutes and “proper cause” requirements obsolete. Great news, right? Not so fast. To put the situation in perspective, we have to step back and consider the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges. PLASTICS are a part of almost everything we use, touch, and depend on. “Plastic guns” were long considered a derogatory term to label inferior firearms, but Avient may be the reason that mindset is changing. Avient is a company built around research engineers and scientists solving challenges with polymer formulations.
