WHILE WORKING for the NRA’s Competitive Shooting Division, I was also serving as a platoon sergeant for B Company, 4th LAR Battalion, a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve unit of light armored vehicles (LAV) at Fort Detrick. In preparation for a possible war with Saddam Hussein’s military, we were activated as E Co. to augment 3rd LAR Bn. Adding to my duties as the armory chief and marksmanship instructor, Sgt. Khan Nguyen, a sniper, and I were assigned as designated markman. Issued Barrett M82A3 .50-caliber rifles, we completed training in Kuwait and staged with the regiment along the border with Iraq.
