ON A FINE FEBRUARY MORNING, son-in-law Brad Jannenga and I headed up through the cacti on his Cross-Y Ranch in the Arizona desert. Desert quail are always strong runners, but this was the end of season, with birds scattered after needed rain, acting crazy and flushing wild.
