The rifle is the premier post-’64 left-hand Model 70 manufactured. It was unfired. Built by the Winchester Custom Shop, it is also the first left-hand Model 70 control-round-feed (CRF) rifle built, even considering prototypes. Although a Sporter stock was specified, a Featherweight stock was delivered. The Springfield Model 1873 “Trapdoor” rifle in .45-70 Government was a godsend to Hollywood filmmakers. Its generic lines and ease of operation allowed it to be wielded, unaltered, in various Civil War dramas, battle epics and Westerns. Creative Hollywood armorers also used the readily available arm as a basis for everything from pirate pistols to Arab jezails. This example was made for the 1936 film “The Charge of the Light Brigade” (1936). The screenplay was loosely based on ill-fated action during the Crimean War in 1854. Rather than using a standard Trapdoor carbine, it was decided to Anglicize the Yankee piece into a rifle that vaguely resembles a proper British-period-issue Pattern 1851 Victoria carbine. SEVERAL YEARS AGO, I attended the U.S. Marine Corps Scout Sniper Advanced Course where we had to shoot multiple qualification drills out to 1,000 yards. My optical companion for that school was a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 3.5-10X scope, and I did well with it. I never felt like I lacked magnification at any point. The 3rd Special Forces Group company I belonged to at the time had the mission of hostage rescue, so I also spent a lot of time doing close quarters battle (CQB). Any rifleman that happens to have a stock with adjustable length of pull and an adjustable comb can make the rifle fit them as well as a tailored suit. Doing so makes it easier to spot impacts through the scope and tolerate a longer and more comfortable stay in the prone position or on a shooting bench. The first step to fitting a rifle is to remove the scope and pull the bolt all the way to the rear. For really accurate rifle shooting, move your head around as little as possible once shooting commences. The shooter should keep his cheek on the comb as he cycles the bolt, so having the bolt all the way to the rear prevents him from accidently getting too close to the action. Removing…

Enter the Modular Age, and let’s consider the popular SIG Sauer P320 and X-series pistols. When SIG Sauer introduced the hammer-fired P250 and its unique fire-control chassis system in 2007, few anticipated how disruptive the chassis concept would be.
