WHAT SHOOTS A .350 LEGEND? Tom Beckstrand’s column on the .350 Legend omitted information on what guns chamber the new cartridge. What are they? A superb presentation-book-cased and engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver realized $73,800 at the October 30, 2018, Morphy Auction’s firearms sale. This splendid .31-caliber, five-shot percussion revolver was fully engraved with scroll and foliate designs. ONCE RESERVED for gadgets demanding five-figure prices, companies like FLIR are now bringing thermal, electro-optic technology within reach of the average consumer. In 2010, FLIR released its first hand-held thermal monocular Scout product, the TS series. Then came the value-priced Scout PS retailing for $2,000. Still one of the top-grossing and most watched films of all time, Director Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” (1975) was the ultimate shark film, but it also contained a considerable amount of firearms — mostly in the guise of several M1 Garands. Of the M1s to appear in the film, some were used by members of the U.S. Coast Guard to (almost) shoot characters wearing fake shark fins. Another used by Orca Captain Quint, played by Robert Shaw, was unsuccessful at wielding one. UNUSUAL 1903 COLT MARKING Q: I have been a Guns & Ammo subscriber since I was 12 years old in 1980. I thoroughly enjoy “Gun Room” and your articles on vintage firearms. I have a standard U.S. Army Colt Model 1903 revolver. It appears to be original with matching serial numbers. The finish is worn but without rust or pitting, and the bore is bright and shiny. The timing is slightly off, but it still locks up and shoots fine, although it shaves a little lead off .38 Long Colt ammo. I really like the fact that it is clearly marked by no less than three inspectors: “JTT”, “RAC” and “LEB”. THE ACT OF CHANGING MAGAZINES in a pistol seems to be an easy enough concept. The gun runs out of ammunition and the shooter puts more in. Let’s try and avoid complicating the matter. For the armed citizen, statistics suggest that you’ll never even have to reload. (Gunfights tend to end quickly, precluding the need for a reload.) Still, good training demands that we be prepared. Most readers have not been in a gunfight, but I have. In my experience, I can tell you that you’re not going to count rounds. AS THE SAYING GOES, “There’s more than one way to skin a cat.” The same can be said for pistol ammunition development over the past 10 years. The goal of ammunition manufacturers since the late 1980s has been to develop reliable and consistent terminal performance that’s minimally affected by reasonable urban barriers projectiles might encounter prior to striking a target. ON SEPTEMBER 13, 1994, U.S. President Bill Clinton signed into law the Violent Crime and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 (H.R.3355), also known at the time as the “Crime Bill.” Among the many provisions of H.R. 3355 is the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB), officially written as the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act — a sweeping prohibition on the manufacture and sale of dozens of firearms and magazines.
