ONE OF THE MATCHES that got me where I am today is now back. Called simply “The Pin Shoot,” it is happening again annually during the second full week of June, in Central Lake, Michigan. I OCCASIONALLY STUMBLE across items that make life as a rifle shooter a little easier. As easy as it is to always be focused on the rifle or scope, there are a handful of small products that make shooting much more convenient. A couple of my most recent finds are a rifle-mounted level and a two-round quiver from Hoptic USA. Once the distance from shooter to target gets further than about 400 yards or so, it’s time to put a level somewhere on the rifle. Shooting with a canted rifle will create misses off the left or right side of the target. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, there was a time not so long ago when knowledge of distance was the primary limitation to long-range field shooting. In fact, for the first 30 years of my hunting career, we judged distance by guesstimation. NATO and many of the world’s militaries standardized the mil-dot system in the 1950s, which can be used to calculate estimated range, and some sporting reticles can be used through making associated size comparisons. Mostly, however, we used the “football field” method. DUTCH OFFICER’S PISTOL? Q: I sure do enjoy reading your column every month. Your analysis of these unusual pieces is always interesting and educational. There’s a lot of vicarious pleasure in living the history of the guns with their owners. Last week, I was thinking about it, and realized that I have a mystery item of my own lurking in the family. My dad served in the U.S. Army from the Battle of the Bulge to the end of World War II. He sent back the attached item, which he always called a “Dutch Officer’s pistol.” He, like so many veterans, didn’t like to talk too much about his experiences, and the history has been lost to time. IT’S NO SECRET that miniature red dot sights (MRDS) mounted on pistols are blazing a path toward the future. I’ve been carrying them on various carry pistols for the last 20 months. I have no plans to go back to irons because the benefits are too numerous, especially if you’re dedicated to practice. During the last 20 months, optic manufacturers have been working toward developing and enhancing a better sight. Almost all MRDS were originally designed for use on long-guns, generally as secondary roles. Companies did not anticipate that these would be mounted on reciprocating pistol slides that transfer far greater G-forces through the circuitry of the optic. AMONG THE SEVERAL noteworthy techniques shown in the Viking Tactics Rifle Malfunctions DVD, retired Sgt. Maj. Kyle Lamb discusses how to clear carbine malfunctions — with one hand. Given that rounds in a gunfight can fly both ways, it is valid training that could help you “stay in the fight,” as Lamb puts it, and save your life. There are no timeouts in a shootout.
