There’s something for every shooter, young and old, both techie and traditional. Historically, Ruger has steered clear of trends serving a more traditional market with wood-stocked bolt-guns, shotguns, .22LR rimfires, single-shots, as well as revolvers, semiautomatic rifles and pistols. I MIGHT BE GETTING LONG IN THE TOOTH, but I can admit it when modernity produces something worthwhile. In the current instance, I’m referring to different grip shapes and sizes for handguns. Specifically, the different-sized backstraps on polymer-framed pistols. A couple of generations ago (maybe three, depending on the age of the reader), Col. Charles Askins was a famous gunwriter and lawman. One of his pieces of advice was to pay attention to grip size. THERE’S A LONG HISTORY of gun manufacturers expanding from their original product lines. Among other things, FN made cars and CZ built motorcycles, for example. Winchester’s expansion into consumer goods such as roller skates after World War I produced mainly red ink and future collectibles. If you visit Savage’s factory, the little museum at the entrance includes lawn mowers and exercise belt machines. Smith & Wesson once offered bicycles, and Remington was an important manufacturer of bicycles, cash registers and typewriters as early as the 1870s. ANYONE WHO has served in the infantry or Special Operations community is probably familiar with the statement, “Ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain.” Weight isn’t a big deal until you’re carrying something for hours or days at a time. Under those conditions, every last ounce needs justification to stick around. There is currently a wave of lightweight AR-pattern rifles floating around the market. Although few people carry a rifle for more than a few minutes at a time, the push for lighter and smaller is a natural extension of rifle development. TIMES WERE DIFFERENT WHEN I WAS A KID. We didn’t have iPhones or internet or cable TV. We did have amazing wonderlands called libraries, and my school libraries contained hidden treasures. Sadly, I doubt many of today’s youngsters will find the same riches that I discovered: W.D.M. “Karamoja” Bell, Jim Corbett, J.A. Hunter, Robert Ruark and John “Pondoro” Taylor’s “African Rifles and Cartridges.” It was in those pages that I discovered that magic phrase “Nitro Express.” Published in 1948, Taylor’s book remains the definitive work on big-bore rifles in their heyday. In recent years, it has become popular to question Taylor’s authenticity and character. I think this is deplorable because he can’t defend himself, thus the truth cannot be known. WARREN PAGE HUNTED this heavy-horned Persian ibex in the Elburz range in northern Iran close to the Russian border. As with most of his hunts, Page carried “Old Betsy,” a 7mm Mashburn Super Magnum scoped with a Redfield 4X and fed a 175-grain Nosler semi-spitzer bullet. An accomplished hunter, Page was fascinated by all things related to rifle accuracy and cartridge development. Considered the rifle expert’s gunwriter, his master work, “The Accurate Rifle” (1973), remains a classic.
